I disagree to the speaker that the beginner is more likely than the expert to make important discoveries in some realms of inquiry. Because, mostly, for some reasons the latter have more opportunities to find more important information than the beginners.

The quality of the person may decide the weigh of the discoveries. A good researcher must be cautious with every little thing, and try his or her best to find whether there are some unusual things. Important discovery could not be found by a person who is used to ignore things or forgetful. One the other side, it can not help to discover important things when the beginner has no ability to identify some hidden evidence, while experts are good at such things. For example, a person without education about economics can not conjecture the national economic tendency in the future years, although he or she has a survey data about GDP in recent years, because he or she can not find out the relationship among these numbers ,saying nothing to the rhythm. And a farmer who had never heard the antiques or archeology, will never realize the importance of the archaic potsherd he digs out from his fields.

Further more, the environment will result the discoveries. Frequently, it is the ability of equipments blocks people to discover some evidences. For example, if we had no ultrasonic detector, we could not find the way of communication between the whales today. So the beginner has no other avenue to discover this thing. And it is resulted by outside elements, not the beginner’s fault. Similarly, the beginners who tried to discover whether there are animas exist in Mars had no great progress for many years. Because, at these time, scientists only can observe and justify whether Mars has any water on it through astronomic telescopes. And today human already have space airship to approach Mars close enough and ensured that there is evidence to show  once water existence.

Sometimes, the accidental things will affect the discoveries. The random things happen all the time. As a result if the inquiry has not be accomplished hand and foot, the discoveries may be overlooked and even be misleaded. So to make important discoveries at first may not happen to every beginners. There too many such instances, occasionally, two things just happen in a time order, people may mistake that the latter is caused by the first one. Beginners may be confused by such situations and be baffled to have important discoveries.

In sum, the beginner may have more chance to approach great discoveries, but it does not mean they are more likely to find them. The elements leading for the final discovery are mostly complex, experts with ample experience and caution have more opportunities to be close to the important discoveries.
