argument147:"Although the sales of Whirlwind video games have declined over the past two years, a recent survey of video-game players suggests that this sales trend is about to be reversed. The survey asked video-game players what features they thought were most important in a video game. According to the survey, players prefer games that provide lifelike graphics, which require the most up-to-date computers. Whirlwind has just introduced several such games with an extensive advertising campaign directed at people 10 to 25 years old, the age-group most likely to play video games. It follows, then, that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically in the next few months."

The author of this argument endorse that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically in the next few months. To bolster this recommendation, the author cites statistics about a survey of video-game players. Moreover, it is also indicated that the extensive advertising campaign directed at people 10 to 25 years old will increase the sales. This evidence involve the sort of gross oversimplification and appears to be somewhat convincing. Close scrutiny of this evidence reveals that it is based on some dubious assertions.

First of all, the survey's reliability which is cited in this argument is too low to be depended by the author. Without a representative result in the overall group of video-game players, for the substantiation of the sales increase on Whirlwind’s new game, the author cannot rely on this survey. At the same time, the respondents at 10 to 25 years of age are not significant. This age group is not typical enough to represent all the player enthusiasts.

Furthermore, the survey stats the most important respects which the video-game players thought, but these respects cannot determine which game they will buy directly. Perhaps such other facts as music, operation, action, storyline, character design and package design could alter player's determination. To make the survey reliable, the author should supply the lacking evidence.

In addition, the argument predicts a dramatically increase of sales which is caused by advertising campaign and the result of survey. In fact, there are many other facts to affect the sales of games. Maybe the new video-games are highly expensive because of large investment on technology of lifelike graphics. And the players have to pay much more to update their computers to satisfy the high performance of games. Or perhaps other competitors will introduce similar games at lower prices or with other features to attract video-game enthusiasts. Without ruling out such possibilities, the prediction of sales increase is not possible.

Finally, the advertising campaign directed at people 10 to 25 years old cannot increase the sales certainly. Although this age-group plays video games most likely, they cannot purchase the game defrayment definitely, and the author also cannot predict that more people would buy this video-game under the effect of the advertisement. Maybe a widely advertising finesse could bring up the sales of the product.

In summary, the conclusion claimed in this argument is unacceptable and misleading. To solidify the argument the author would have to demonstrate that the survey is reliable and completely. Additionally, to better assess the argument, we would also need more information regarding the market of video-game. Only with more convincing evidence could this argument become more than just an emotional appeal.
