Issue36
36. "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."

I strongly agree with the speaker's statement that the greatness of individuals should be decided by those who live after them, instead of by their contemporaries, for the reason that great people usually exceed their time and society, and that real greatness needs to be testified by time and by people with a more objective standpoint.

To begin with, truly great individuals, especially those prominent artists and thinkers, always go beyond the time and society they are in, thus being more likely to be misunderstood by their contemporaries. A typical example is Claude Monet, one of impressionism art. Since his paintings were radical in his time and broke many of the rules of picture-making set by earlier generations, in his time he received little by abuse from the public and critics alike, who complained that the paintings were formless, unfinished, and ugly. He and his family even endure abject poverty. Another example is Van Gogh--one of the representatives of postimpressionism artists. Unlike traditional styles, he focused on emotional or spiritual meanings that the subject might convey. Thus his paintings were rarely understood by most artists of his era. The above two example has illustrated the point that we can not depend on the judgement made by the individuals' contemporaries.

Secondly, real greatness should be tested by time since what appears to be great due to the contemporaries criterions, may turn out to be mediocre after many years. For example, those skilled artisans, who can produce fine articles and conform strictly to the widely accepted principles, are more likely to receive praise from the people of their time. Yet their works lack of originality, but as a mere reproduction of the same pattern. As time goes on, the artisans' articles become increasingly less important until to be wholly neglected by history. On the contrary, the creative artists, with innovation spirit, can produce great masterpieces in which they not only show remarkable skills, but convey some deep and subtle internal meanings. Thus their works are more easily to stand up to time tests and to receive acknowledgement from the people living after them, becoming permanent fortune for human beings.

Finally, the people living out of the individuals' time and society, with their objective standpoint, tend to make wiser judgement about the greatness of the history figures. One example to illustrate this point is Lincoln Abraham, the 16th president of the United States. Being one of the great leaders in American history, he opposed the slavery in the whole country. It is no doubt that his actions towards the emancipation of slaves had harmed the benefits of the South, particularly the slave owners. As a consequence, he was assassinated by an angry, half-crazed actor with pro-Southern sympathies. He might be misunderstood by some people of his time. Nevertheless, he has received great honor today for his contribution to the abolition. People today, whatever their backgrounds and their races are, can regard him as a hero, because their benefits today are not affected by his policy and they can see the progressive meaning of it. Normally the father people are from the history figures, the more objective their judgement will be.

To sum up, great artists and thinkers usually go out of their time and society, thus the comments on them from their contemporaries are unreliable. In addition, time can serve as a touchstone for true greatness and people tend to make more objective and wiser judgement when they are out of individuals' time and society.

I strongly agree with the speaker's statement that the greatness of individuals should be decided by those who live after them, instead of by their contemporaries, for the reason (reasons)that great people usually exceed their time and society, and that real greatness needs to be testified by time and by people with a more objective standpoint.

The above two example (examples) has (have) illustrated the point that we can not depend on the judgement made by the individuals' contemporaries.

As time goes on, the artisans' articles become increasingly less important until (?) to be wholly neglected by history.

People today, whatever their backgrounds and their races are, can regard him as a hero, because their benefits today are not affected by his policy (policies)and they can see the progressive meaning of it (?). Normally the father(farther) people are from the history figures, the more objective their judgement will be.

To sum up, great artists and thinkers usually go out of their time and society, thus the comments on them from their contemporaries are unreliable. In addition, time can serve as a touchstone for true greatness and people tend to make more objective and wiser judgement when they are out of individuals' time and society.
