TOPIC: ARGUMENT71 - Copper occurs in nature mixed with other minerals and valuable metals in ore, and the proportion of copper in the ore can vary considerably. Until fairly recently, the only way to extract pure copper from ore was by using a process that requires large amounts of electric energy, especially if the proportion of copper in the ore is low. New copper-extracting technologies can use up to 40 percent less electricity than the older method to process the same amount of raw ore, especially when the proportion of copper in the ore is high. Therefore, we can expect the amount of electricity used by the copper-extraction industry to decline significantly.

The author's expectation in this argument is that of using new copper-extracting technologies which can save 40 percent electricity when it processes the same amount of raw ore in attempt to decline the amount of electricity used by the copper-extraction industry significantly. Unfortunately, his expectation would be necessarily to be realized.

To begin with, the author fails to substantiate that these new technologies can really save electricity. We are only informed that this method can save 40 percent electricity when processing the same amount raw ore compared with the old ones, but how about the productivity of new technologies? When we ask the question that producing the same amount copper, how much electricity will be saved with new technologies compared to the old ones. The common sense and experience tells us the answer is uncertain. Thus, we have good reason to doubt this method is not really effective in saving electricity.

In the second place, even assuming that this kind of method can actually save electricity as the author suggests, there are also other problems which would hamper its wide use. For example, new technologies absolutely need new apparatuses to substitute those old ones, if the expenses are too dear, the mineral owners would probably continue to use the old machines. What is more, even the machines of new technologies are not expensive, when processing raw ore, their course is complicated, or needs more labor forces, the mineral owner may also reluctant to substitute their old machines.

Final and not least, given that new technology is wide used, it does not necessarily the case that it will reduce the amount of electricity used by the copper-extraction industry. Consider new technologies can save electricity, it means that it can reduce the cost of producing copper, which would in turn spawn industry of copper, thus the amount of electricity may possible not reduce, rather increase due to more amount of copper produced. Furthermore, the author fails to consider whether the new method can cause environmental pollution. If so, not very long, the government would forbid the use of this method.

TO sum up, the author only considers the advantages of new technologies, which is insufficient evidence to support to realize the situation he suggests. Only if the author can provide concrete evidence that new method can save electricity, and other pragmatic aspects of put new technologies into practice, he would make us believe that his expectation would really be realized sometime in the future.
