I disagree that tradition and modernization are incompatible. Conversely, tradition continues well with the modernized society. In addition, modernized technology help preservation of tradition.

Admittedly, tradition and modernization are incompatible in some cases. For example, in the times that people wear suits and dresses, if you wear ancient costumes in the street, it must be ridiculous or be seen as an actor. And modern science and technology tend to eliminate wrong opinions in the past, such as superstition and alchemy, which results from the contemporary limited knowledge. Furthermore, once traditional building in city influences the layout of modern construction, people should count the cost, and choose one between them. However, mostly tradition still plays a vital role on the spiritual and material lives of people.

First, people tend to conserve and respect tradition, as a conviction and faith, rather than change or abandon them. For example, in China, people have tradition to celebrate Spring Festival to welcome the coming year and unite the whole family. On that day, people have grand dinner, wear fresh and new clothes, and send greeting to each other, just as traditional culture lasting thousand years. Similarly in the western country, people still honor the habit to go to church on every Sunday for the ritual of praying and singing the chant. On the Easter Day, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ, people hold magnificent feasts, wear new clothes and roll eggs down hills.

What’s more, modernization also appears as extension of antiquated thinking. They are of harmonious relationship. Without the fundamental essence of tradition, the fruits and accomplishment of modernization would be tarnished or even disappear. Look at the previous great people, Einstein, Newton, Copernicus, Cantor, etc. Though we cannot find any tangible application in their theory directly, the significant work they have done is undoubtedly the watershed in the science development. And tremendous invention and discovery nowadays are deduced from their abstract theory. These improvements are very drive to promote the modernization and benefit modern people.

Finally, modernization helps tradition to be recognized and preserved, which make tradition keep vital and animated. For instance, Tunhuang Grottos, one of most mysterious and significant cultural heritage in China, has been destroyed to severe extent since it is open to the visitors. Now a new technology is explored to build digital Tunhuang Grotto museum on line, which provides vivid and exhaustive view of the grottos, and its fabulous culture. This technology not only exhibits the traditional accomplishment to the public, but also prevents the place from being deteriorated. Take another example, the Chinese traditional medicine. Compared with western medicine, it has no definite gradients and analysis of mechanism of treating; nevertheless it has unpredictable effect towards some severe diseases. These Chinese traditional medicine prescribed by experiments before, which has high risks; while now modernized measure could help clarify the elements of this kind of medicines and make it have determinate effect of treatment, and then better and wider application.

In sum, though tradition and modernization have minor conflicts in certain aspects, it does no harm to their compatible and harmonious relationship. Tradition is conserved and honored in the modern environment, and provides the foundation and direction of modernization; in a mutual way, the modern methods catalyze the preservation and acceptance of tradition.
