At the mention of artistic achievements, people would conveniently associate them with the greatest writers, directors, musicians and painters, such as Shakespears, Peter Jackson, Beethoven, Van Gogh as well as their masterpieces. However, when it comes to the critic, there is severe divergence on whether the critic contributes to the birth of something of lasting value. In my opinion, I prefer to[to去掉] the viewpoint that the critic does nothing.
To begin with, people often tend to live under the illusion that it is the critic who discovers the artist, makes him or her known to the public. But it is not the truth. It is natural that the value of a masterpiece isn't be[be去掉] acknowledged at the moment it is created. Perhaps the meaning implyed[implied] in a works[一件作品是work] is too profound and inscrutable to be understood for the masses, but along with the enhance[enhancement] of the appreciatory level, the works will eventually earn its reputation.[分析的不错!] Stephen Chow, a famous Chinese actor and director, serves as a good exam. His magnum opus “Chinese Odyssey” was not accepted initially, since it overthrows the traditions by adapted [by adapting]one of Chinese most famed classics[Chinese的位置不对,改成one of the most famed Chinese classics,或者one of China’s most famed classics]. However, with the passage of time, nowadays this work is regarded as a classic of comedy and its artistic value is established[这个搭配不好,可以改成value is recognized;如果是reputation可以用established] more and more throughout the nation even the whole world. Yet the critics did not play any role in the whole process. Perhaps sometimes the critics sometimes lead people to, but they only accelerate the process. Without them, some works with lasting value may be kown to the public more lately, but it is undoubtedly that it would be accepted[改成but they would undoubtedly be accepted] some day. In short, the critic doesn't exert decisive effect on the discovery of a masterpiece.
Second, instead of leading the public to appreciate the works, the critic may produce unfavorable influence over the appreciation. On the one hand, as the critics has[have] their own positions, emotions and experience which influence one’s judgement to a large extent, so[前面有as了,后面的so可以省略] it is often that the critic’s evaluation distorts[so the critic’s evaluation often distorts更简洁] the original intention of the artist, which would mislead the public. On the other hand, even if they can bing something hidden in the work to the surface so that ordinary people can appreciate it form another angle, but in view of the particularity of art, a critic can only provide a side-effect. The appreciate of art should be an impact between the works and our spirits, which needs nothing but a devoted heart. Therefore, it is useless for the critic to do anything.[每个人都可以对一件作品有自己的解读这个意思不错。但是最后一句话,it is useless for the critic to do anything有点绝对。]
Third, someone may believe that the critic can provide useful feedback to artists and helps them to improve his or her works. Howbeit, works of art is quite different from others, which can’t be simply classified as correct or wrong. Everyone has his or her own criterion, so it is unnecessary for the artist to modify his works to cater to the public. An artist with no characteristic will not achieve success.
Finally, imagine that artists don’t work and no opus is created, then what will the critics do? Maybe they have to transfer to another job. Without artists and the works they creat, the critic this occupation has no reason to exist in the socity[如果没有特指哪个社会,就说a society]. In other words, the critic depends on the artist and actually in some sense, the critic is a product of the artist. Thus, it is meaningless to discuss whether the critic gives the society something of lasting value.
In summary, just as no noe can refuse[refuse不好,可以干脆用deny,或者belittle, disparage] the charm of Romeo and Juliet, The Lord of the Rings[and] symphony The Foutune, no one can deny that it is the artist, not the critic bring works of art and give lasting values to our society. |
