TOPIC: ISSUE36 - "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."
WORDS: 738          TIME: 1:21:08          DATE: 2006-7-27

How can we evaluate a person, by achievements one has made, by judgment from his contemporaries such as colleagues and friends, or by his influence on his surroundings after his death?

Some argue that we should concentrate on one's contribution to the family, to his work, or even to the nation and the world. Only when his efforts do make some change to the community, can we judge his greatness and exemplary power. While others may think that we should rely on opinions from one's contemporaries, with a reason that people living in the same age fully understand the things going on, thus make the most objective evaluation. Nevertheless, I still believe that the greatness of individuals can be decided only by their descendants, for the glory of great leaders and their achievements will shine for decades and thus enormously infect the situation after their death.

In politics, the greatness of political decisions and activities came to  be fully realized after they have endured the test of times and proved to be crucial to the national development. Let us come back to the U.S. in the 1950s, where black people were segregated from white. Rosa Parks, a commonplace black housewife, refused to get up from a seat left to white people, thus elicited one of the greatest social movements in the history of America. Johnson, U.S. President at that time, advocated an amendment to the Constitution, with an inclination to protect black people from ethnic discrimination and give back freedom they deserved. Condemnation and accusation flooded the country, especially in the South; while plots and assassinations were secretly planned, targeting President Johnson and his supporters. The Civil Rights Act finally emancipated black people from jaundice, and consolidated the foundation of American democracy, which today still greatly influence American attitude towards immigrants and the formation of "melting pot". Based on the typical examples, we may conclude that the greatness of political success could be fairly judged by offspring.

The same thing would also happen in arts and literature, where many of the great figures that we admire today died in obscurity. Let us take Van Gogh, the famous forerunner of the Expressionism, for example to look into this point. Van Gogh was regarded as one of the greatest painters in history of arts; however, he was living in loneliness all his life and died with no one concerned. Ignored by his contemporaries, he became popular and was honored a lot of admirable titles after his death, with one of his life paintings selling for 50 million dollars. Another example also well cites this argument. Wang Xiaobo, one of the most respectable writers in China, gained the reputation for his special thinking pattern and elegant writing style when his obituary was announced. His books soon stood at the top sellers shelves, his articles became extensively imitated, and even his wife, a sociologist studying sex and family, was regarded as an idol. These artists ultimately attain the fame, partly because their works are really wonderful, partly because those who live after them, having experienced the greatness and profound essence hidden, could discover their contribution to the arts and the world.

Another crucial reason might be that great people usually go ahead of their time. They can point out the faults which no one has ever noticed, propose a seemingly unacceptable idea which is inaccessible at the time, and foresee the future which seldom people can imagine. Copernicus is one of this kind. Disregarding the objection from the church and ignoring the popular theory of the galaxy, Copernicus sticked to his research and the truth, brave enough to endure the pain fire brought and the insult everyone casted on him. However, he never gave up, since he was a giant on astrology and able to touch the essence of the truth. Centuries have passed, scientists realized the value of his theory and made it an axiom, as a rebuttal to the church and a high appraisal to his efforts. Giants can see things in a long distance, just because they grow taller and stand higher. Scientific giants, who cannot be fully understood by their contemporaries, are destined to gain their agreement after decades.

The greatness of individuals can be well judged by those who live after them, as long as their contribution still shines a lustrous glory as well as profoundly influencing social development.

(第一句最好提出本段中心) While others may think that we should rely on opinions from one's contemporaries, with a reason (读着不顺。。。) that people living in the same age fully understand the things going on, thus make the most objective evaluation. Nevertheless, I still believe that the greatness of individuals can be decided only by their descendants, for the glory (这个短语不要这样用,会引起误会,因为for the glory是一句口号,欧洲骑士的"为了荣誉") of great leaders and their achievements will shine for decades and thus enormously infect the situation after their death.

In politics, the greatness of political decisions and activities came to be fully realized after they have endured (好词。。) the test of times and be proved to be crucial to the national development. (例子很好但是太长,与论证不成比例)The Civil Rights Act finally emancipated black people from jaundice, and consolidated the foundation of American democracy, which today still greatly influence American attitude towards immigrants and the formation of "melting pot". Based on the typical examples, we may conclude that the greatness of political success could be fairly judged by offspring.

The same thing would also happen in arts and literature, where(领域不用这个吧)many of the great figures that we admire today died in obscurity. Let us take Van Gogh, the famous forerunner of the Expressionism, for example to look into this point. (插入语用的不错)Van Gogh was regarded as one of the greatest painters in history of arts; however, he was living in loneliness all his life and died with no one concerned (and finally killed himself ^_^). Although being Ignored by his contemporaries, he became popular and was honored a lot of admirable titles after his death, with one of his life paintings selling for 50 million dollars.

Another crucial reason (for what?) might be that great people usually go ahead of their time. They can point out the faults which no one has ever noticed, propose a seemingly unacceptable idea which is inaccessible at the time, and foresee the future which seldom people can imagine.(赞一个) Copernicus is one of this kind.
