Issue 47
"Society does not place enough emphasis on the intellect---that is, on reasoning and other cognitive skills."
The speaker asserts that society should place more emphasis on reasoning and other cognitive skills. I concede that the intellect makes great contributions to individuals and society, however, empirical examples show that we cannot overlook the positive benefits of non-intellectual skills in other unknown realms. In my point of view, society should strike a balance on this issue to make sure the constant development of the entire world.

Intellectual skills such as reasoning and other cognitive skills play a significant role in the developing of individuals and the whole society. Our process of education, appearing in the form of theory, actually is the process for us to develop our intellectual skills. Philosophy tells us that everything on the earth is changing all the time and nothing is absolutely resting as well as the cause-and-effect theory; physics tells us that any two stuffs have gravitation between them. Etc. all these disciplines are providing us correct ways of analyzing and solving problems and cultivating us into one of strong intellect and characteristics such as equality, liberty, democracy and so forth, which can conquer the human instinct weakness such as jealousness, greed, evil and lust for power and domination. Such qualities: justice, self-disciplined, rational, stimulate individuals’ enthusiastic of studying and working as well as served as a series of ordinances so as to increasingly improve their effectiveness and creativity. people with reasoning and cognitive skills are, as a result, more capable for competitions and more productive for the development of society’s economics, furthermore, they are developing into the steady supports for our nation’s political. For one supporting example, one needs look no further than the social contributions of computers whose inventors and operators are all well-educated people with reasoning and cognitive skills.

However, undue emphasizing on the intellect and un-emphasizing on non-intellectual skills will bring negative consequences to individuals and society, at least two hazards. On one hand, undue repression of one’s proper desire and reasonable instinct will likely lead to depression, sadness and even some physical illness, accordingly lowing the productiveness of the social economics. There is a compelling example from Japan, that nearly every big corporation has a special room where stand dolls with the face similar to one of the company’s officials. After criticized by an official, the members of the corporation would come into this room and crazily beat the doll whose face is exactly that official’s so as to release their angry. We can hardly image how one works within increasingly hostile emotion. On the other hand, non-intellectual skills may make great contributions to the world’s progress in unknown realms and collect useful discoveries. For example, in the realm of non-mainstream, the so-called “insights”, regardless of their theoretical basis, gives people a line if hope to search for better lives when they lose in their confused situations.

In the other way, however, emphasizing on non-intellectual skills and un-emphasizing on the intellect will carry dangerous consequences for any society. For supporting examples, look around the American long-lasting social problems: the rate of shooting event in campuses is all time high; the abortion is more and more popular. All these behaviors coming from the human’s evil instinct reflect their incomplete reasoning and other cognitive level. As a result, all human-beings should cultivate their intellect in order not to see these blooding events.

In sum, I agree with the speaker’s assertion that society should place enough emphasis on the intellect on the basis that reasoning and cognitive skills play a significant role in the development of individuals and society. However, we should place balanced emphasis on the non-intellectual skills in spite of their contributions in other unknown areas. As a conclusion, human should try their great efforts to associate the opposite sides for the development and the peace of entire world.
