The significance of history won't fade as time flies. Although the trends of dramatically developing of our society and technology make the value of history seems trivial nowadays, it still hold an impregnable position on wilder realms.

Students, especially science major ones, doubt about the necessity of learning history in college as they hold the opinion that taking part in this course gives them little help, if there is any, to their research subjects as well as studying courses. Actually, since technology is changing at a pace we have never witnessed, great inventions and discoveries in science and technology become obsolete as fast as you can imagine. In this aspect, studying this kind of history, though it does have some relevancies with modern society, means no sense in their research. However, when consider carefully, one will begin to realize the importance of history in other aspects. What history provides us are not examples to copy but ways of thinking to use for reference. Before students and researchers do their work, it is of great significance to establish a system of knowledge as well as problem solving methods, all of which originates from history. Standards and patterns are set up long ago in history, though with different content according to respective period of time. The three laws of motion were developed centuries ago but students in physics still give them the first priority. The idea of impressionism is established years ago while young painters still turn to it for inspiration. In these two case, the seemingly irrelevant principles in history have great value today.

Also, history means a lot to everyone in mental and emotional aspects rather than practical. Although the story of famous people and events in history seems irrelevant to us. We can live a good life without knowing where we come from and having little knowledge in milestones in history or the first world war do not prevent us from getting a sound pay. But in fact, these history people and events will provide us with mental "food". On one hand, some people hold on to a believe all their life long, a believe which has a historical origin, and which will carry them through in front of difficulties; one the other hand, some historical figures are still honored by people. They learn from them the ability to communicate with other people, the perseverance to get through the difficulty, the quality of self-criticism and the character of being helpful and generous, all of which are the basis to become a successful person.

Finally, let's take our long look to the range of society. Studies of history, useless in some people's opinion, can give us the opportunity to understand where our society comes from and where it will go to. Those factors that had affected historical changes might happen once again in future. When we get familiar with these changes in history, such as what is the cause of them, how to prevent defective changes and how to trigger favorable changes, we will be able to determine the best way of future development. Those factors which had lead to chaos in history will never happen again in the case of studying historical experience, and our society will develop faster with the help of history.

In sum, the extent of history has been so huge that in fact, there are no mere irrelevances between history and our daily lives. The studying of history can be vital both practically and emotionally today and tomorrow.
