130．"How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society."
130．孩子融入社会的能力决定了社会的命运。遗憾的是，我们还不知道怎样培养孩子使他们对社会有益。

提纲：
①        社会化的意义和重要性。Anthony Giddens的定义。社会化的两方面：交流和知识。
②        当代社会有阻碍社会化的因素。如单亲家庭和电视。
③        然而事实是人们懂得如何培养孩子使他们对社会有益。

How children are socialized is known as the process of socialization. My point is that socialization of children is a determinant factor in how a society fares in the future. And although there are factors that could impede the process of children’s socialization, people have already learned how to raise children who can help build a better society.

Socialization is of great importance both for societies. The sociologist Anthony Giddens describes socialization as the process whereby, through contact with other human beings, the helpless infant gradually becomes a self-aware, knowledgeable human being, skilled in the ways of given culture and environment. Interaction and knowledge are two important tasks of socialization. One aspect of socialization is about interaction skills. As the saying goes, no man is an island. All people must live and work with other people. Children’s interaction skills today define how well a society’s people can cooperate with each other. The other aspect of socialization involves getting knowledge, which includes the learning that our mankind civilization has accumulated, a good study habit and the social norms and customs in a given culture. It is essential for children to be knowledgeable because the knowledge level of members in a society can greatly affect how the society fares. In a word, a proper process of socialization is of important meaning for a society.

Nevertheless, in our modern societies there are unfavorable factors which could impede the proper socialization of children. For example, children from single parent families could have more unfavorable conditions for growing than other children because these children are more likely to lack the attention and love from parents which are important elements in the stage of socialization which takes place in family. Television could also be an unfavorable factor, because there is violence and other bad things on TV nowadays and these could affect a child’s behavior in a bad way. Also children could spend more time than they should to watch TV and spend an insufficient amount of time studying or playing with their peers and the playing with peers is also an important element that gradually develops children’s interpersonal skills.

Although there are these problems discussed above, people nowadays have indeed learned how to raise children who can bring about a better society. Modern education has proved effective in socialization. In modern societies, an important stage of socialization of children begins with school. School is the place where children learn the knowledge that our civilization has accumulated and passed on from generation to generation and develop a good study habit. They also learn the social norms and cultural customs in school. Fact is that people have raised children who brought about good changes in societies. Let’s take a look at all those famous and distinguished people in the human history. Admittedly some of them were born gifted and talented, most of them have become successful and made important contributions because of their family and the education they received. So we can be positive that people have already known how to raise children who can make a better society.

In conclusion, although there are impediments to the progress of children’s socialization in our societies, people have known the importance of socialization and the effective way to raise children who can make a better society. The task now is to make these effective methods get across by spreading and improving education, and inform parents of educational knowledge.
