TOPIC: ARGUMENT56 - Collectors prize the ancient life-size clay statues of human figures made on Kali Island but have long wondered how the Kalinese artists were able to depict bodies with such realistic precision. Since archeologists have recently discovered molds of human heads and hands on Kali, we can now conclude that the ancient Kalinese artists used molds of actual bodies, not sculpting tools and techniques, to create these statues. This discovery explains why Kalinese miniature statues were abstract and entirely different in style: molds could only be used for life-size sculptures. It also explains why few ancient Kalinese sculpting tools have been found. In light of this development, collectors should expect the life-size sculptures to decrease in value and the miniatures to increase in value.

This argument is not cogent because it assumes that cited correlation implies causation, which is not necessarily the case. The argument asserts that because molds of human heads and hands on kali, they can conclude that statues are made by molds, and they were abstract and different, the value of miniatures will increase while those of life-size sculpture will decrease.

First, the arguer fails to give complete proofs that Kalinese artists used molds of actual bodies, not sculpting, to produce life-size sculptures. There are many other several aspects which can also induce this result. Although molds of heads and hands are found, it cannot mean all the life-size sculpting were made by molds. The other part of a body might be made by sculpting tools, or some of the statues are made by molds and others are made by sculpting tools. And few tools being discovered does not equal to that few tool ever being used. Because during a long time, many factors may destroy those sculpting tools, such as flood, earthquakes and so on. Thus the arguer makes fallacies when he produces this conclusion.

Secondly, there is little evidence to substantiate that the abstract and different style of miniatures resulted from being created by sculpting tools. Many other reasons can be related to it. For example, miniatures might be produced by the persons who have special arts interests. And they favored abstract style. Or those miniatures have different usage from those of life-size sculptures.  Then because of such difference, they had to be made in different style. That is to say, we cannot conclude that those exotic miniatures are made by sculpting tools just because they are different.

Finally, the arguer get illogical conclusion that the value of life-size sculptures will decrease while those of miniatures will increase. Common sense tells us that many factors influence the value of antique. For example, the number of one thing is much less, the value of them is much higher, since the market lack of supply. And the value of art and history also influence antiques’ value. If the artist and historian discover some special and valuable things in some antiques, these antiques’ value will increase correspondingly. Therefore, the arguer fails to make a rational prediction of the value of miniatures and life-size sculptures.

To sum up, if the arguer want to make a logically acceptable argument, more evidence should be given to prove that all miniatures were made by sculpting tools and all life-size ones were made by molds. Additionally, the arguers also have to prove that the value of miniatures will increase while those of life-size sculptures will decrease.

This argument is not cogent because it assumes that cited correlation implies causation,(这里是固定的套路么?) which is not necessarily the case. Finally, the arguer get illogical conclusion that the value of life-size sculptures will decrease while those of miniatures will increase.(前面都不错, 这里让人倒吸一口, Finally这里也应是自己的观点吧) Common sense, (据说新东方张雷东所言, Common sense这样的话少说会影响论证的强度,改成In actuality, many factors inflence the value of ) tells us that many factors influence the value of antique. For example, the number of one thing is much less, the value of them is much higher, since the market lack of supply. And the value of art and history also influence antiques’ value. If the artist and historian discover some special and valuable things in some antiques, these antiques’ value will increase correspondingly.
