TOPIC: ARGUMENT235 - The following appeared in a memorandum from the general manager of KNOW radio station.

"Several factors indicate that radio station KNOW should shift its programming from rock-and-roll music to a continuous news format. Consider, for example, the number of older people in our listening area has increased dramatically, while the total number of our listeners has recently declined. Also, music stores in our area report decreased sales of recorded music. Finally, continuous news stations in neighboring cities have been very successful, and a survey taken just before the recent election shows that local citizens are interested in becoming better informed about politics."
WORDS: 502          TIME: 0:30:00          DATE: 2006-8-21

In this argument, the arguer suggests that radio station KNOW should shift its programming from rock-and-roll music to a continuous news format. To support his view, the author used some evidences and a survey taken just before the recent election. However, this argument bases on an unconvincing survey and suffers from a series of poor assumptions and cause-and-effect fallacies, which render it wholly unpersuasive as it stands.

To begin with, the author failed to give out any evidence that older people living in area do not like rock-and-roll music and how many percent do those older people take in the total audiences. The author mistakenly based on an assumption that older people do not like rock-and-roll music but he did not prove it at all. Perhaps older people living in this area are fond of this kind of music since they used to listen to rock-and-roll such as Beatles when they were young. Even if we assume that those older people do not like rock-and-roll, how could the author arbitrarily came to the conclusion that it would greatly affect our listening-rate? It is possible that only few people in this area listening to KNOW radio station while the station's main audience are youngsters whose favorite is just rock-and-roll.

Moreover, the author wrongly contributes the reason of total number of their listeners decline to the rock-and-roll programming but he did not consider any other factors that might cause such result. Maybe the hosts of such programming are very boring or the rock-and-roll songs they play in the program are too old to attract listeners. Under such circumstances, change the topic of their programming would not be a good idea for KNOW radio station.

Thirdly, there is no clear relationship between the listeners' taste and the recorded music's decrease in music stores of this area. Since the author can't prove that the people who are buying the recorded music in the music stores are exactly or mostly the listeners of the KNOW radio station, this evidence is totally meaningless. It is probable that recorded music in the music stores are mostly about jazz and classical music, which would lead the author's assumption coming to the opposite.

Finally, the survey cited by the author is inconvincible as well. It is conducted just before the recent election while the author uses it to discuss an daily program of KNOW radio station's program. As we all know, before the election, people surely intend to get more information about politics but their passion about politics would disappear after the big event. Hence, I cannot be persuaded into believing that people want to know more about politics in the KNOW radio station.

To sum up, the suggestion is not well supported. To strengthen argument, the author should provide more information about the radio station's listener component and their exact favor of programs--perhaps through a survey to its listeners conducted by some objective organization. Finally, to better evaluate the argument, I need to know more about the relationship between audiences who listen to KNOW radio station and people who purchase recorded music in the music stores of this area.

In this argument, the arguer suggests that radio station KNOW should shift its programming from rock-and-roll music to a continuous news format. To support his/her view, the author used (cites,一般现在时态)some evidences and a survey taken just before the recent election. However, this argument bases on an unconvincing survey and suffers from a series of poor assumptions and cause-and-effect fallacies, which render it wholly unpersuasive as it stands.

To begin with, the author failed(fails) to give out(enumerate) any evidence that older people living in area do not like rock-and-roll music and fails to tell me about how many percent do(去掉) those older people take in the total audiences. It is possible that only few (older) people in this area listening (listen)to KNOW radio station while the station's main audience are youngsters whose favorite is just rock-and-roll.

Moreover, the author wrongly contributes the reason of total number of their listeners decline to the rock-and-roll programming but he did not consider any other factors that might cause such result. Maybe the hosts of such programming are very boring or the rock-and-roll songs they play in the program are too old to attract listeners. Under such circumstances, change(changing) the topic of their programming would not be a good idea for KNOW radio station.

It is conducted just before the recent election while the author uses it to discuss an(a) daily program of KNOW radio station's program. As we all know, before the election, people surely intend to get (acquire)more information about politics but their passion about politics would disappear after the big event.

写得的确很好,句子多样,脉络清晰。但是注意语法和时态的问题。
