In this memo, the president of a chain of cheese stores recommend that the stores should concentrate on domestic cheeses and stop stocking many varieties of imported cheese to improve profits in all of their stores. The author's recommendation relays on many unwarranted assumptions and therefore is not persuasive as it stands.
In the first place, the author's recommendation relies on the assumption that domestic cheeses will be more popular than imported cheeses. However, the evidences the author provided are insufficient to justify this assumption. It is high possible that their newest store are built in the place where people in favor of domestic cheeses. Maybe there are many sale promotion of domestic cheeses in these stores, thus the price of domestic cheeses are much cheaper than imported cheeses there. Without ruling out all the possibility that give rise to the sale of domestic cheeses, we can not accept the assumption.
Further, the survey the author based is also unreliable. The author only points out the preference for domestic cheeses rise, but not provide any statistics to show that people prefer domestic cheeses more than imported cheeses. It is likely that in the past only 10 percent of people love domestic cheeses and now the percentage increase to 20 percent. Otherwise, the author also does not prove whether the respondents are representative of customers, and the validity of the survey by the magazine. Lacking so much information, we could not use this study to support the recommendation.
Finally, even assume all the unsure assumptions and evidences are true, weather the recommendation really can make effect on the profits in their stores are doubted in many ways. The author fails to provide any evidence to show that they can make more profits by selling more domestic cheeses. Maybe many domestic cheeses' prices are so cheaper due to the competition with other stores, the stores can hardly benefit from the sale. Moreover, the sales of domestic cheeses in newest stores can not typify all the stores located throughout the United States. People in different areas have different taste, maybe they do not feel like domestic cheeses.
In sum, the recommendation the present provide is unpersuasive as it stands. To strengthen the recommendation, the author must justify that the benefit of domestic cheeses will rise by adopting recommendation. He also must provide evidence to show the validity of the study and people’s preference of domestic cheeses are more than imported cheeses.
