TOPIC: ISSUE48 - "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."
Outline:
I fundamentally agree with the speaker's claim that recent study of history has lay too much stress on outstanding ones, and the masses did not play a margin role in the most significant history trends. With no regard of important functions of groups of people, our understanding of history remains partial or even unwarranted.
First and foremost, when it comes to certain famous historic events, human always make direct correlations between such events and those distinguished ones, such as American Revolution and Washington, The second world war and Hitler and so forth. The reason for this is that our study of history often pays more attention to these individuals. It is reasonable for the historians to study history according to such famous individuals' movements, which were crucial to propel development of those events. Consider, Planck, Max and Planck's constants. He introduced the hypothesis that oscillation atoms absorb and emit energy only in discrete bundles instead of continuously, as assumed in classical physics. Compared with the multitudes restriction of knowledge and hackneyed senses, such elites always overthrow antiquated notions and profoundly understand the direction of development of history. With their own hard work, the progress of history were propelled considerably. Apparently, it is useful for our historians to study history by means of discovering and analyzing such elites' influence in history.
Though i concede the individuals did not only influence but actually determine social advancement in some cases, it does not mean that we can overlook vital influence from groups of people upon our historic progress. After all, the function of certain individuals simply indicate a true way of us, the main power of advancement stems from people's strive. Consider , a variety of inventions such as telephone, television, electric lights and so on , are really in spread use due to people's works. For example, televisions are produced by lots of manufactures of television. The source of contents of TV stems from community. But for the mass's endeavors, a television would be still in a laboratory and regarded as magic instead of being used by the mass and changing our daily lives.
Moreover, such famous individuals were fit for desires of the general populace ,which may be just obscure. That is to say, without the elites' efforts, the mass still could find another one, whose ideas were consistent with their needs. If we cast a look back at the second world war, it is easily to find that rationality of Hitler's success. After the first war, German was in huge economic depression. Intending to change their dilemmas suffering from those social problems such as poverty, violence and upset , most of German needs a hero who can help them healthes of body and soul. At the moment, Hitler seize this opportunity and satisfy the populace's needs successfully.Accordingly, without catering to the masses' wishes, it is difficult for those elites to contribute to history.
In sum, what is harmful for historian to study history giving no consideration to the masses' contribution. To make our study of history more comprehensive and reasonable, we should call for a balance between the individuals and groups of people . |
