TOPIC: ISSUE226 - "People are mistaken when they assume that the problems they confront are more complex and challenging than the problems faced by their predecessors. This illusion is eventually dispelled with increased knowledge and experience."
WORDS: 693 TIME: 0:40:00 DATE: 2007-3-3
There is no denying that the precious experiences and knowledge summarized by predecessors after they solved various kinds of problems or deadlocks can greatly help their later generations when they are in the new labyrinths. However, the author fails to realize that as the knowledge and experiences have been provided, the problems themselves are not invariable, and probably may turn to the more difficult and complicated direction. In such cases, the assertion of the author may be one-sided. Intricate as the topic is, I will discuss it in the following details.
Admittedly, it is unwise and inappropriate to exaggerate the difficulties when we confront the similar predicaments which our predecessors have already solved. In terms of technology, the pace of the prior talents can give us instructive indications. Before the recently found method that can fundamentally heal the blood cancer, it is indeed a disease that makes the patients and doctors depressed. However, such diseases, like many other kinds of cancers, can be easily treated as a common cold. In the field of natural science, although sailors have been feared the awesome ocean in the Hope Corner for thousands of years, with the help of the ocean scientists, and also the sufficient experience their predecessors have accumulated at the cost of their lives, they can pass such areas of ocean without risking their lives as before. Such constant problems actually can be less complex and challenging after failures and successes made by our ancestors, and just for their sacrifices, we have the privilege to no longer fear of those problems which used to threaten us before. In such cases the author's assertion actually is a good advice for those who assume or even assume the never extant difficulties.
However, the forgoing acknowledge of the assertion is based on the conclusion that the problems remain the same as they were dealt with by our predecessors. When it comes to the realm of problems related to people, the conclusion may be opposite. The demands of the athletes are apt illustrations for my viewpoint. Decades ago, if a player brilliant football player want to beat his rivals on the playground, he only has to learnt the skills of his coach, practice hardly, and finally adjust his emotion when he is playing in the match. Such solutions seem naive and pure from today's angle. A player has to do much more than their predecessors did, because of their challenges also become harder in spite of their knowledge gained from ancestors. They have to face the boredom mediums; they have to treat the relationship with the references; they have to take nutrition with great care to prevent from being accused to taking drugs. All these problems mentioned above are completely new both to the present and former players. Obviously their predecessors cannot offer them anything about those unfamiliar traps. The players have to face with each step of these problems all by themselves, and gradually find a proper way to handle those boring problems. When the finish conclude their solutions to their problems for the younger players, other new problems may come out, which are again brand-new for the older ones. Just as the President Roosevelt once said, and I cite 'Yesterday's answers are incorrect to today’s questions; just today's solutions are inadequate for tomorrow's problems'. What ever the effective conclusions the ancestors made for their later generations, once the problems change, such conclusions may fade, or even become of no use. Therefore, it may be presumptuous to assert we should not concern the difficulties of the problems we have to face with.
Even the problems can actually be solved by the previous solutions, the sufficient considerations of the intricacy of the problems can sometimes inspire our potential to overcome the problems faster, or to achieve better results. It is entirely possible that on the last match Mancherest. United can beat Liverpool with a 2-0, if the Man.Utd can still emphasis the power of their rivals, in tonight they may even gain a result of 3-0.
In summary, the author overlooks the significance of the previous experience and knowledge, and the fact that the everything forever is changing. |
