Issue41.Such non-mainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science.:handshake
I concede that such non-mainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits which have been existing since the emergence of mankind played an important role in society, especially in the ancient times. However, in my view, the existence of those so-called non-mainstream areas is the consequence of the inadequate development of science and it will give a bad effect on people and the development of science.
The existence of astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits can be traced since the emergence of mankind and you can find them in several forms of materials such as literature, paintings, and poems that are handed down from ancient times. They had played a very important role in ancient people’s daily lives. For example, without the advices of the switches, Macbeth would not murder the King and get himself overthrown and killed. It is true that Macbeth is just a story of Shakespeare; nevertheless, it shows the effect of the non-mainstream areas’ effect on people at some aspects. In fact, in Greek, the king of one country would go to ask the soothsayers for good luck before launching a war to another country, and anyone who went out for business would ask the advices of fortune-tellers before leaving home.
However, the existence of those so-called non-mainstream areas had greatly hampered the development of modern science. For example, Copernicus himself got imprisoned and tortured by the church because his theory that the earth and other planets revolve the sun is different from the Religious and Philosophical beliefs in the medieval times. On one hand, by satisfying the human needs, the existence of those non-mainstream areas will give people the illusion that only the astrology, fortune-telling can be trusted, and devalue the function of science. On the other hand, the so-called fortune-telling will give people false hope and beliefs which would bring people nothing and even disasters.
It should be pointed out that the existence of those non-mainstream areas is the consequence of the inadequate development of science which makes people ask for help from some kinds of spiritual forms. Admittedly, those so-called non-mainstream areas still exist and will exist for a long time, but the effects they have on people will become weaker and weaker as the development of science.
To sum up, the speaker overstates the role that so-called non-mainstream areas played in people’s life, and ignores the originality of the emergence of those areas. Nevertheless, such non-mainstream areas had played an important role in ancient people’s life. |
