In this set of materials, the reading passage discusses, an issue regarding a phenomenon that what children performance in different groups. In a simple group children could learn and study from other elder children, and in complex group children would compete with each other. The listening passage provides an experiment what causes competitions between children.

The reading passage debates on the research studies of children group. First, multi-age always consists a simple-age group in which younger children could learn more knowledge and get more needed information from elder children. It is advantages to cultivate children. It is opposite in complex groups in which same age and same background peers get together. This group represents socialization, cooperation, group work, equal position and also –competition. It finally come to a conclusion that the same background, economy and social standard result in competition.

The listening passage provides an experiment what is the possible cause of childhood competition. In this section it adds more opposite ideas refuted to the reading passage. To begin with its suppose, researchers designed an experiment which consists with 22 boys from same social group with same age, same social background and same economic environment. According to the experiment boys were divided into two groups in one week, and meanwhile competition was discouraged. So boys showed little sign of competition. In second stage, they were set up with competitive sport with rewards to winners, for example basketball, football and so on. Competition was embodied between two groups. In the third stage, two groups was put back again and offered a same task to fix water from lake. So they would have water to drink. Facing with the same goal, competition disappeared and cooperation stand out. One possible cause that change is rewards from adult world. If without rewards, competition will disappear either.
