TOPIC: ISSUE51 - "Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
WORDS: 506 TIME: 00:42:00 DATE: 2007-7-24 下午 07:18:07
I partly agree with the speaker's assertion that education would be more effective if it is designed to serve the individual's needs and interests. However, that is not the only means by which education would make full play of its function and also it is unpractical and needless to design education system according to every student's appetites.
First of all, we have to admit that individual interests and needs place significant role in education. If schools can carry out their curriculum in accord with student's needs and interests, it would help to further explore individual's talent and potential as well as motivate them to engage in study. For that matter, students would get the opportunities to improve their abilities on their favorite subjects, which in turn, make them more competent to future employment. As for the society, various specialists with their enthusiasm would be provided to advance the evolution of society through the effective education system. Or otherwise, students' talent and genius would be overlooked and finally faded with the time goes by. There is a good case in point, the greatest inventor Edison was once regarded as a changeling in the elementary school since he always asked his teacher some eccentric questions within which expressed his interesting in natural science. However, in his teacher’s eyes, such questions were nothing but meaningless and beyond the traditional viewpoints, then he was excluded out of the elementary school. The afterward story about him told us that if he continued to accept such schooling, it is definitely that our world would lose the most prominent investor who brought vital contribution for social modernization. Hence, we can conclude from the above presentation that it is of great importance to design the education according to individual's interests
However, considering another pivotal function of education, says the instruction of basic knowledge and fundamental technique to students, what is advisable is to view the students as a whole to provide them the normative education no matter what their needs and interests are. As we all know, our schools are responsible to help students form the basic value and cognition system of the world by teaching them the information about natural science, laws and regulations, moral and ethics and so forth. On the basis of such common sense, students would find their genuine interests and talent. In addition, the fundamental technique such as reading, writing, logic analyses and interpersonal skills would enable them better prepared for future word and lives. Hence, when comes to some basic part of education, students would be guided with the normative instruction.
Moreover, it is still unpractical and useless to specifically design education pattern to meet every individual's need. On the one hand, the educational resources such as the fund for employing more teachers, designing various course, providing more classrooms for teaching are limited, which means it is unfeasible for education circles to offer huge additional financial support to serve every student's need. On the other hands, some low-year students, especially in elementary school, lack the ability to judge their actual interests and correctly guide to the healthy destination. If the blind liberty were drawn to encourage their improper interests on educational fields, hardly would they do any good to our society or they may even hazard the social harmony and stability. Simply up, it is unpractical and needless to design education in accord with the specific needs and interests of every individual.
In sum, it is important for education to address the needs and interests of students. However, when referring to the common sense and basic technique, students should be guided under the education with the same norm. Besides, taking into account the limited educational resources and the potential hazard of complete liberty in education, it is unpractical and needless to manage the education to fulfill every student’s need.
