Should a city try to preserve its old, historic buildings or destroy them and replace them with modern building? Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

As a country with more than 5000 years history, it was left plenty of historical constructions that intersperse in the whole domain. Should we conserve these bequests or dismantle them to gain more lands for other modern buildings? I welcome to save them.

To begin with, we have to admit that preserving the old, historic constructors limited the development of the cities to some extent. As we know, in most big cities in China, the land sources are lacking, especially in the latest decade.  Many factories, gyms, as well as the universities have to be built in the outskirt and replace the cultivated field while some historical buildings occupied large amount of spaces in the urban. Besides that, for maintaining a harmony scene of the whole cities, architects cannot design the buildings near the historical ones in the modern style that confined the diversity of outlook of a city.

Nevertheless, although conserving the old buildings costs so much and sometimes seems harmful to the economy of a city, the culture, historical, as well as the architectural meanings included in them are worth to be appreciated. For instance, the Imperial Palace, which is a deputy of Ming and Qing period, brings us a mass of precious information for historical research. Moreover, the buildings themselves, with full-bodied oriental style, are the best textbooks for architects. Moreover, some of the historical interests also could bring revenue to the city, such as the Great Wall, which is considered as a symbol of China attract billions of travelers around the world and increase the income, about several hundreds billions RMB annual of the city.

Furthermore, some historical buildings record the humiliating epoch of our race which is important for our descendant to remember. Albeit some of the constructions only left debris, they are still the most vivid educational materials. For example, the Yuanming Palace, we can imagine how the invaders destroyed the beautiful and luxuriant palace, deprived the assets, and killed our compatriots when ever we see the remains that should never be forgotten. The relic could galvanize ourselves and our offspring to study and work hard to avoid the tragic replaying.
