According to the speaker, the nonmainstream areas of inquiry plays a paramount role in the society because they can satisfy human needs while their counterparts the mainstream science can hardly address all the problems of human beings nowadays. At the first glance of the issue, this opinion seems some what reasonable. Nevertheless, further reflection tells me that the writer ignores many practical problems.

First of all, whether the public should place more emphasis on the nonmainstream areas of inquiry such as astrology, fortune-telling, psychic and so forth at the expense of dismissing the mainstream science - which mainly is natural science - or vice verse often depends on the issue of which is more important. As far as I am concerned, it is true that there are many problems the natural science can tackle with in the present circumstances. For example, there is a harsh reality of a widening gap between the haves and the have-nots. The former can live in a villa, drive an expensive car or afford to fly around the world to sightsee and some even own their private plane. In the mean time, the impoverished among the latter can hardly make the ends meet. Consequently the have-nots may believe in the astrology and the fortune-telling because these subjects can release them psychic while the mainstream sciences can hardly help them in a short time.

However, the nonmainstram subjects like the astrology and the fortune-telling can hardly solve any problems indeed and they can only satisfy human being spiritually. Therefore, we can not spend all the time in these areas. For example, in the era of Renaissance, Sir Newton, a famous physicist, believed in God in his old years and he wanted to find out where the God really was with the mathematic formulas. Nevertheless, the result is rather disappointing after his investigation and he can hardly make any progress. So the nonmainstream areas are unreliable and we can not waste out time in them.

What's more, in order to reject these subjects, we the government should place more emphasis on dealing with the problems of its citizens in order to improve the normal living standards. While on the other hand the educators should exert their effort such as to spend more money and more time on the research of mainstream science such as mathematics, chemistry, mechanic, computer science and so on. If we refuse to do so, the nonmainstream areas may be more and more popular in our daily lives and ultimately these subjects will become the mainstream of the society in the future.

Simply put, it is all because many harsh problems can't be addressed by the mainstream science that the nonmainstream areas will be popular in our daily lives for they can satisfy human needs. All we should do now is to do our best to solve the problems we faced and exert our best effort to research mainstream science in order to pursue a brighter future.
