103 - "The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."

What do we get from history? Is history of little use when it has slight relation with our daily lives, as the speaker asserts? While concede that in such rapid pace of social change, something in the past are no longer suitable for contemporary, I strongly disagree with the speaker in that what history leave for us actually are much beneficial to us and the study of history should not be ignored.

Admittedly, with the rapid improvement in technology and society, many things or living ways have been replaced in many aspects. Human history is alway proceeding in progress so that new technology and discovery are continualy achieved for the improvement of living quality. Advanced media technology makes communication more convenient: we can now send E-mails which can be instantly received  instead of sending a letter in post office which usually cost several days for delivery in the past. New transportation methods significantly cut the time on journey: aeroplanes cost us only several hours from Madrid to New York which Columbus used three more month to finish. We can see that new technology and discovery really take place of the former things of history, greatly improving our daily life.

Nevertheless, with the benefit from the contemporary technology and discovery relevant to daily lives, does the study of history really have little to do with us? Of course not. We still could get a lot useful for us from the process of history, not matter in its great achievements or its impressive mistakes.

Firstly, the study of history can provide us with useful experience and information which are of great help to contemporary nowadays. As to the realm of science, what have been handed down by generations are pith of the accumulation of our forefathers' efforts, filtered by numerous tests. Scientists could achieve little if they leave the historical experience. The great scientist, Newton once said( and I paragraphed), "If I can see further, it is because that I stand upon the shoulders of the giants." Without studying former theory and gaining useful information from them, his great law of gravity, which contribute significantly to human history will never born. Actually these former theories may have little to do with his daily life. These are sufficient to illustrate that the great experience from forefathers are so vital to contemporary they should not be ignore in study of history.

Furthermore, regarding the advantage from the positive side of the history, the study of mistakes committed by the people as a negative side in history and the lessons drawn from that also give us warning and make us prevent similar happenings in order to lead a better life. We all know that on the road of progress, mistakes are inevitable, but the lessons we get will outweigh the mistakes for human beings. One need look no further than Hitler, one of the biggest hegemonist of history, enacted so unjust laws and placed a tyrannic pressure on populace, which brought a huge disaster to the world. Coming leaders and the world are warned how bad a result would occur due to these guilt and they will avoid such kind of happenings to ensure a peaceful and harmonious society. Likewise, mistakes in history also present useful things for us during the studying of history.

In sum, although history is less relevant to contemporary life as a result of rapid technology advancement and the total social change, what the study of history should not be ignored in that we can learn not only from the precious experience but al from the mistakes of our forefathers. In short, history play an important part in our life and it deserves our attention forever.
