Some people say that advertising encourages us to buy things we really do not need. Others say that advertisements
tell us about new products that may improve our lives. Which viewpoint do you agree with? Use specific reasons and
examples to support your answer.

On the question of how to define the function of advertising, I agree with the point that advertisement encourages us to buy something necessary.

For one thing, advertisements usually make us believe we need products of their company to better ourselves, and they usually utilize celebrity as the most effective spokesman. However, the consumer usually need not these things. Before I attended the university and majored in advertising, I used to follow the step of my favorite movie stars or singers to buy their favorite lipsticks, shampoo, clothes or foods. Celebrity's advertisement is credible at that time to me and my friends. After I eventually became an advertising student three years ago, and went through a myriad of failed experience of trusting famous people and commercials, a truth of advertisements disclose to me: they convey a concept to us that all the audiences have deficiency compared with perfect film stars or actors, only with the help of this advertisement are we able to improve ourselves in both interior and exterior aspects. For instance, our skin can be as smooth and white as the actress in the commercials if we use the same brand with her, whereas the actress's perfect skin is not only related to the product, or even has nothing to do with it. In others words, their connection is the star has the benefits of earning a large amount of money, meanwhile the company can acquire good reputation of their products.

For another thing, advertising is different from what the product really is in most cases. In other words, we actually bought something unnecessary when we thought we purchased a useful one at the beginning. A single example can serve to illustrate my point. My cousin is a gluttonous boy, therefore he goes to the supermarket immediate every time the new advertisement about food is on. He once asked me: "why what I bought is distinct from what I looked on the television? There is no additional ham and I cannot understand why the boy in the television enjoys it so much." Therefore, the actual condition is covered by the commercial and it is the impulsion which let us make some unwise decision to spend money on something we will not use in the future.
