In this memo the president recommends discontinue stocking many of varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheese. To support this recommendation the president cites the facts that the five best-selling cheeses at their newest store were all domestic cheddar cheese. In addition, he also cites a survey by Cheese of the World magazine which may indicate an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Furthermore, the president's assumed that their company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory. However, the statement alone does not constitute a logical argument in favor of its conclusion and fail to provide compelling support making this argument sound.

First of all, that the five best-selling cheeses at their newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin is little indication that people now more likely prefer domestic cheese. First, the newest store is not representative enough to all of their stores. Perhaps other stores' best-selling cheeses were all from foreign countries. The arguer does not provide the evidence that not only the newest but also the rest stores' domestic cheese are more popular than imported cheese. Secondly, even if the domestic cheese were most popular, the profit may actually much less than import cheeses. Suppose that, maybe the popularity just due to the lower price. Maybe people are more likely to purchase the domestic cheese with a lower price whatsoever. Although the import cheese may less popular, but with a sound price, it can also make large profits.

Secondly, the president cites a survey to substantiate his conclusion. However, the survey might be problematic in two respects: First, we are not informed that whether the subscribers are composed with the customers. Perhaps, most of them are critic of food who advocate the domestic products but actually they would not buy them or they seldom go to the stores. Secondly, even if the subscribers are also the customers, but the increasing preference for domestic cheeses cannot guarantee that they would go to buy them. It is equally possible that they just express the preference; in fact, they may purchase the import cheeses for some reasons such as maybe a more convenience packing.

Finally, the arguer draw his conclusion based on the assumption that limiting inventory would help reduce expenses. He may neglect some other results of the action. Perhaps some customers are those who prefer import cheeses; they could not buy the cheese the want in the store. Most likely, they would turn to other stores which sell the import products. As a result, the chain of cheese stores may lose a large number of customers, and at the same time they may lose a large number of profit. Hence, they may have to spend more money on advertising to attract enough customers, on the contrast, which may lead to a large expenditure.

To sum up, this argument is not convincing as it stands. To make it logically acceptable, the author would have to show that the best-selling cheeses in stores all of the country are all domestic. Additionally, the author must sure that limiting would really reduce expenses. Only with more convincing evidences could this argument become more than just an emotional appeal.
