------题目------
Competition is ultimately more beneficial than detrimental to society.
------正文------
I fundamentally agree that competition bring about more beneficial than detrimental to our society, as the speaker contends. Simply consider us, human being surviving as one kind of species is the result of natural selection, which is called as “Theory of Natural Selection” according to Darwin. In fact it is the competition in the natural world, which provide species impetus to survive. Similarly, competition also serves as the stimulus to make progress: in sports for winner, in study for the first, in election for the president, in business for higher productivity and efficiency.
I turn first to the individual level; competition is conducive to personal development. It is competition, which spirits us up, and makes us try our best to achieve success and reach our goal, no matter vie in sport games or in one’s study. Without the incentive effect of competition, everyone might lose the energy and will to endeavor due to the nature of laziness and indolence, and thus the development of society would come to a halt.
Examples from political aspect can also support the point that competition is beneficial. The political election is one form of competition. With this institution, the person who wishes to be elected should not only possess distinguished qualifications, abundant political working experiences, but also make efforts to express himself to the public and gain sufficient trust by the people. Then, the person who is excellent and convincing to some extent may compel other competitor and win the election. With a leader like that, the effectiveness and efficiency of the policies and the welfare of the people could be ensured to certain degree.
Moreover, competition also promotes improvement of our society. Take the digital products as an example. Due to the keen desire to occupy greater market possession and catch more consumers, the manufacturers all do their best to enhance the quality and reduce the prize of products. Then, we can buy the products with better performance and lower prize. Eventually, it is we, the consumer, who gain the benefits. Competition among telecom service provider is another example. We all remember several years ago, the expenses to make a phone call through mobile phone is much more expensive than through ordinary telephone. Nevertheless, as the result of competition, we can now call each other by mobile phone at as nearly the same prize as fixed telephone. What's more, there are various kinds of whole-set services for us to order, which can save our money further. Similar examples as Airline Company and bank, whose services are also improved a lot for the reason of competition. Surely, no matter what improved, the quality of products or the level of services, it not only benefits the customer, but also indicates the development in such industry.
Without doubt, competition brings a lot of benefits to society. However, under certain circumstances, it can also take deleterious effects, especially when it is being practiced unsuitably. Think about art, which should be works out from artist’s pure inspiration and creativity. Nevertheless, many of the paintings, music, and sculptures are now being connected with profit and market competition. In this situation, the artists are required to cater to the public appreciation, which certainly inhibits the development of art and the evolution of culture.
On the other hand, over emphasize on competition would be detrimental to society no matter in which area. Because in this case, competition would impose too much pressure on the competitor and even induce the competitor taking improper and unlawful means to gain success, such as bribery and cheating. Consequently, the society or market may be thrown into totally confusion.
To sum up, I strongly agree with the speaker’s assertion that we can benefits a lot from competition. What we should notice is to pay appropriate attention on it, and consider frequently whether our competitive behavior makes pressure on others or takes detrimental to society. |
