TOPIC: ARGUMENT47 - Scientists studying historical weather patterns have discovered that in the mid-sixth century, Earth suddenly became significantly cooler. Although few historical records survive from that time, some accounts found both in Asia and Europe mention a dimming of the sun and extremely cold temperatures. Either a huge volcanic eruption or a large meteorite colliding with Earth could have created a large dust cloud throughout Earth's atmosphere that would have been capable of blocking enough sunlight to lower global temperatures significantly. A large meteorite collision, however, would probably create a sudden bright flash of light, and no extant historical records of the time mention such a flash. Some surviving Asian historical records of the time, however, mention a loud boom that would be consistent with a volcanic eruption. Therefore, the cooling was probably caused by a volcanic eruption.

1.反驳从亚洲和欧洲的历史纪录中得出地球变冷很多的论断
2.反驳由于尘埃云层阻挡阳光导致温度骤降.
3.反驳对地球由于巨大的火山喷发引起温度急降.
The arguer asserts that the significantly cooling on Earth in the mid-sixth century was probably caused by a volcanic eruption, which can creat a large dust cloud through Earth's atmosphere, blocking enough sunlight, according to some surviving Asian historical records of the time. This argument is flawed by several vital respects.
To begin with, the fact that some accounts found both in Asia and Europe mention a dimming of the sun and extremely low temperatures is insufficient to support that ,in the mid-sixth century ,the global temperatures cool down framatically.Although few historical records survive from that time ,from these records found in Asian and Europe,it is unconcluded that all over the earth's temperatures became lower.Because they are just one part of the earth especially in the northern hemisphere.Perhaps in the southern hemisphere, the temperatures are higher than before .Or perhaps thse records were made by a short period in mid-sixth century ,which are coincidence with the dimming day and lower temperatures. That is to say this historical record is written about some unusually phenomena.Unless the arguer can ruling out this possibilities, this assumption is unwarranted.
In the second place, even though the earth was cooling greatly, the arguer fails to present the persuasive evidence that the large dust cloud throughout Earth's atmosphere, which can be created by a huge volcanic eruption or a large mete orite cooling with the Earth, blocks the enough sunlight resulting the lower temperatures.Adimettedly, one more layer of the atmosphere can prevent the sunshine from achieving the surface of the earth. However , the arguer fails to take the raining days and cloudy days into account.Without sunshine,we are told nothing about the temperatures on these days. What's more, the evidence can illustrate nothing when it comes to the night temperatures'change.By contrast, during the night time, the one more layer can keep the temperatures of the earth. Therefore, lacking of the sound evidence which explains the reason for this change, this argument is unconvincing definitely.
Last but not least, even if the large dust cloud makes the dramatically temperatures dropping, the arguer unfairly generalize that it is likely due to a volcanic eruption that the temperatures dropped significantly, based on some historical records in Asian. The fact that no extant historical records of the time mention a flash causing a large meteorite collision doesn't indicate that there are no flash caused by a large meteorite collision.Perhaps people mistake them for the other phenomena.Or perhaps people have not yet found the kind of recording at present. In addtion, the surviving Asian historical records of a loud boom demonstrate nothing about the cooling.Because the volcanic eruptions happens so often that it can not prove that these attribute to the lower temperature. The arguer ignores the factors and does not convince me that the cooling war probably caused by a volcanic eruption.
In sum, this argument is not reliable ,lacking of sufficient evidences. To assert that assumption ,the arguer should provide evidence that in the southern hemisphere there exist the same records, and make sure that whether the large dust cloud responds to the temperatures's cooling, and identify the probable effects caused by a huge volcanic eruption or a large meteorite,To strengthen this argument ,the arguer should find out more historical records about the huge volcanic eruption and the large meteorite. |
