Argument9:
提纲:
1. 学生成绩上升可能由别的原因造成,如教学质量提高
2. Omega大学毕业生就业不如邻近学校未必是由成绩浮夸造成的
3. 取消评价制度未必能帮助学生找到好工作
In this memo, the dean at Omega University ascribes graduates’unsucces in job hunting to the implementation of a procedure allowing studentsto evaluate their professors. To support his opinion, the dean points out that therise in students’ average grades have made an impression among potentialemployers that the grades in Omega University are inflated. Based on thisreason, the dean concludes that it is necessary for Omega Universityto terminate student evaluation of professors to ensure their graduates can getsuccess in job hunting. However, in several respects, the evidence lends littlecredible support for the argument.
First of all, the dean’s suggestion is based on an unfair assumptionthat the increase in student’s grades is the result of professors’ willing toplease their students. The dean ignores many other explanations for the rise inaverage grades, such as the enhancement of students’ ability. In fact, the aimof implementation this procedure is to urge professors to put more attention ondaily teaching so that students can get more benefits from their class, andtheir abilities will be increased. And, the rise in grades is the sign ofincrease in competence. Therefore, without providing any relevant information, thedean’s arbitrary assumption is unfair for both students and teachers.
Secondly, even if the evaluation procedure produces grades inflated,it is unwarranted to make a conclusion that such grades inflation induces thefailure in job markets. The only evidence given by the dean is that graduatesfrom nearby university obtain more opportunities in job market. However, thedean fails to provide any information on whether the students’ grades are increasedin nearby university, and whether the abilities of students in nearbyuniversity are weaker than students in Omega University. As is known to all, the success in job market depends on many factors includingthe graduates’ major, their self- expectation, and their social relationship.Perhaps, the major setting in nearby university is much more market orientedand students in nearby university could gain more social experiences. In aword, without ruling out other possible reasons contributing the relative lesssuccess in job market, the dean can not justify his conclusion that the gradesinflation makes graduates from Omega University are lesscompetitive in job market.
Finally, the suggestion given by the dean that evaluation procedureshould be terminated to enable their graduates get more job opportunity is outof reason. The dean overlooks other possible ways, which may be more effective,to guarantee their graduates’ success in job hunting such as arranging moresocial practices, providing more guidance on how to get a job vacancy, andconstructing a more market oriented curriculum system. Only by taking much marketaimed steps not just terminates the evaluation procedure, can Omega Universitysecure their students to find a better job.
In sum, the dean’sargument is not persuasive as it stands. To make his conclusion moreconvincing, the dean would have to provide more information on the quality ofeducation in Omega University. Besides, theanalysis about Omega’s job instructing and career preparation is also needed.Other possible measures to improve Omega’s graduates’ performance in job marketare welcome too. |
