36"The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."
WORDS: 552    Time: 2 hours  Date: 2008-1-15
Does greatness of individuals can only be decided by history and those who live after them? The assertion believes so, however, in my point of view, the assertion is unfairly generalized and unnecessarily embraces every realm in human society.
Admittedly, the great individuals often go ahead of their time, whose thoughts and ideology are always beyond their contemporaries’ cognition. Vincent Van Gogh, the master of impressionist, could not sell a single painting during his life time. But now, all of his paintings are considered as the cream of crop and win the highest bids in every art auction. W. Harvey, who established the modern physiology based the discovery of the blood circulation, lost the majority of his patients because of the announcement of that great discovery and himself was considered as a quack by his contemporaries. Ironically, nowadays any informed person knows that the blood in our body circulates day and night and that’s why we can maintain a vigorate life. What the two great persons received from their contemporaries was not commensurate with their contributions. The limit of the majority’s cognition and the restriction of the conservative opinions deny their outcomes’ value, sometimes it will take tens or even hundreds of years to break the limit and restriction. From this aspect, I concede with the assertion that the greatness of individuals can only be decided by people living after them.
However, in some specific realm like politics, there are still much greatness of individuals should be decided by their contemporaries. In politic realm, the major goal of a politician is to ensure his or her people’s safety and ample lives, therefore the judgment of the politician can only be made by his contemporaries. Take the ex-Chinese Chairman Deng for example. Thanks to his proposition and implement of “the open and reform policy”, the overall Chinese people’s living standard has dramatically improved. When Chairman Deng passed away, thousands of Chinese people walked onto the street to mourn the lost of the nation. Although now the policy of open and reform is impeached by many socialists and ecologists for it creates environment pollution and the gap between the rich and the poor, it still can not diminish the greatness of Chairman Deng. Because the policy of open and reform do immediately impel the nation’s economy prosperity and improve people’s living standard.
In addition, in some circumstance the information provided by history is not comprehensive for people to make a correct evaluation for those living ahead of them. On one hand, lack of information and history background may mislead us to come out with totally unfair judgment just like those who impeach Chairman Deng and deny his greatness. On the other hand, history serves as a filter to select the greatest individuals but eliminates all others. Hence, it is very often that many individuals who make great contribution to the society at his or her time could never leave a name in the history. If the greatness can only be decided by those living after them, it is so unfair for the anonymous great contributors.
In sum, as a result of the limited cognition, in many cases the greatness of individuals can only be discovered by those living after them, but to totally leave them the right of judging is neither wise nor feasible.
