TOPIC: ARGUMENT2 - The following appeared in a letter sent by a committee of homeowners from the Deerhaven Acres to all homeowners in Deerhaven Acres.

"Seven years ago, homeowners in nearby Brookville community adopted a set of restrictions on how the community's yards should be landscaped and what colors the exteriors of homes should be painted. Since then, average property values have tripled in Brookville. In order to raise property values in Deerhaven Acres, we should adopt our own set of restrictions on landscaping and housepainting."

In this letter, sent by a committee of homeowners from the Deerhaven Acres(DA) to all homeowners, the author suggests to adopt restrictions on housepainting and landscaping to have a high property values in DA. To support his suggestion, the author points out Brookville, a community near by, use the measures and enjoy a tripled property values. However, the effectivity of reasoning of this letter is weakened by several logical fallacies.

First of all, the author unfairly attributes the increase of property values in Brookville to the restrictions on landscaping and housepainting. Price is influenced by so many factors: the demand and supply, the customer's appetite, the fashion style and so on. It is totally possible that there has constructed a subway to the downtown in Brookville, which is the main reason to explain the increase in house price. Also, perhaps a film star moved in to Brookville and her crazy fans all make a high price in order to get a house near by. All in all, without more details of the reason why property values rise in Brookville, the author can not demonstrate his basic assumption that the main reason is the limitation on housepainting.

Secondly, the author commits a fallacy of false analogy. Although Brookville is a community nearby, it does not mean that it resembles DA in every aspect. There is a probability that the house in Brookville are all big houses with gardens for rich people, while those in DA are small flats for workers who pay no attention on the color of landscaping and housepainting. Under this case, whatever the color is, there will not be any change for the property values in DA. All over, without more evidence and information about the two communities, haste conclusion would be made.

Finally, even though the price is influenced by the housepainting and the two places are the same, the author fails to pay attention to the will of the people who have lived in DA. Maybe there are plenty of seniors who prefer his own decoration for their own house and hate changing at all. Under this circumstance, this plan cannot be placed and practised easily.

This article is unconvincing and half-baked as it stands. To better support his suggestion, the author should provide more details about the reason for the increase in Brookville. And I will suspend my suspect until the author provides more information.
