ISSUE 47
47.”Society does not place enough emphasis on the intellect-that is, on reasoning and other cognitive skills.”
社会没有给与智力培养,即推理技能和其他认知技能应有的重视。
The speaker asserts that society does not place enough emphasis on the intellect-that is, on reasoning and other cognitive skills. I strongly agree with this assertion. As to the importance of the intellect, society should treat it more seriously and carefully.
In a sense, intellectual skills are somewhat like the tools with which we do some working in certain areas of inquiry. Mathematic, proof and other discoveries in math will disappear without the intellect-reasoning and other cognitive skills. If not for systematical reasoning and other cognitive skills developed by human beings of long history, the modern industrial world couldn’t be what it looks like nowadays. One example that aptly illustrates this point involved the field of Mathematic. In the field of Mathematic, the knowledge system is the system used to show how the logical reasoning works? In other words, there is a close relationship between reasoning and mathematic. It is no wonder we should place enough emphasis on the intellect-reasoning skills as the crucial role it plays. What’s more, other cognitive skills are also necessary to us, except the reasoning ones. Owing to these intellectual skills, we become more and more creativity and flexibility.
On the other hand, society has a responsibility for providing a more comfortable circumstance for cultivating the intellect skills. Despite most of us realize the fundamental and essential role the intellect plays, society still takes no effective action to address the human needs to develop their intellect skills including reasoning skills and other cognitive skills. The attitude that is to overlook the importance of the intellect results in the fact that the society is replete with oscillation, hesitant, helpless. This is an example. Lacking of the reasoning and other cognitive skills, a society cannot advance. How can one describe a society that has no art, no literature, no imagination and no scientific knowledge?
Once the behavior of nurturing intellect such as reasoning skills and other cognitive skills stops or develops slowly, the development of society would be hampered. It is not too late to realize our pretermission to cultivate intellectual skills. In my point of view, society should offer enough support to satisfy our basic demands on intellect, not only monetary but also spiritual support.
In sum, because of the importance of intellect, society should place enough emphasis on it. If we could truly understand how to fully use and master intellectual skills, we will benefit a lot, for it can serve as effective catalysis for creativity and for flexibility. The inescapable conclusion, then, is that the speaker is fundamentally correct.
