ISSUE 51
51. Education will be effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student.
只有满足每个学生的需要和兴趣,教育才能真正有效果。
How to deal with the balance between the needs and interests of individual and education designed? The speaker asserts that only if the education is specifically designed to meet the needs and interests of each student, it would be effective. However, in my opinion, it is too superficial and unilateral to make the conclusion. It is far from the true. It is no wonder that needs and interests are important to education designed. But the speaker unnecessarily magnifies the importance.
First of all, borrowing the old saying still prevalent nowadays, we can describe needs and interests of individual as teachers. If we are given the option to choose the subjects we are interested in or not, undoubtly we would choose the magnetic ones. We could easily make progress when we deep ourselves into studying. Needs and interests play a key role in provoking our potential. Thus, an educational system that can take into account the specific needs and interests of each student will help the students to fully develop their distinct potential and talent. In such an educational system, students, feeling centered and appreciated, will be more motivated to study.
Even though we realized the significance of the individual needs and interests, it is impossible to satisfy each student in one kind of educational style. People may take for granted that the more specifically designed education one can get according to his/her own needs and interests, the more effective it will turn out to be, since students will be much more actively engaged in study without the necessity to learn what does not interest them, or what seem to be of no apparent help to their future careers. Reasonable as it may seem, such an educational pattern does not make full use of modern educational resources. Comparing to the amount of students, the resources of the educational establishment and human resources are too limit to be designed specifically for each student.
Secondly, a successful education is an education that can foster fully developed individuals. Even if the educational resources are adequate enough to support the needs and interests of each student, it would do harm to them once they can only choose subjects they are interested in. Students are likely to involve themselves more actively in study if they are offered a unique education designed according to their interests and needs. Nevertheless, specifically designed education should not take the place of traditional general education, because the developing society is in great need of individuals who are well educated and master general knowledge useful to the construction of the society.
On the other hand, although complete liberty in designing education is not available to all individual students, schools can try their best to offer more choices and autonomy to students as long as the quality of compulsory education is guaranteed. For example, to the students whose major are International Commerce, university can provide some specifical courses, such as accounting, international trading rules and language training to students to choose.
In sum, based on the compulsory education which is provided for all the students, university can offer more choice of subjects to satisfy the individual needs and interests as possible as they can. Students will benefit a lot if they can enjoy their learning from the course what they like and achieve other necessary information from the compulsory course university designs. |
