185. “Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could.”
丑闻,不管是政治,学术还是其他领域,都可能是有用的。它们能使我们的注意力以一种演讲者和改革家都做不到的方式聚焦于问题。
The speaker maintains that no matter in politics, academia, or other areas, scandals can be useful as they can focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could. I agree with the broad assertion of the speaker. However, in my point of view, the speaker overlooks a potential result may occur to us if we place too much emphasis on the scandals to neglect their compromise.
Admittedly, it is true that scandals surface some facts that cannot be seen in other ways for the speakers and reformers have to take responsibility for their public affairs. Sometimes, the speakers and reformers have to keep secrets out of the consideration for their authority and public force. Once they realize the presence of scandals would result in burdensome aftereffect, they could decidedly take action to discover the fact in order to sustain the original authority. If the speakers and reformers have no confidence to face with the coming problem the explosion would bring or to handle all the happening caused by the scandals, they may give an option to keep silent. At the same time, scandals can sometimes serve to call our attention to pervasive social or political problems that we would otherwise neglect. Pursuits of the scandal forever increased the level of scrutiny and accountability to which our public officials are held, thereby working a significant and lasting benefit to our society.
Sometimes, we must get recognition that the scandals confuse us and make us overemphasize their fault instead of treating their contribution fairly. On a society level, scandals can serve to call our attention to reform and innovate. Perhaps the paradigmatic modern example is the Monica Lewinsky scandal which was a political-sex scandal emerging from a sexual relationship between United States President Bill Clinton. Involved in the sexual scandal, Bill Clinton fell into an embarrassment and got nearly to end up his eight-year-long political career. This scandal did a promotion to renew the value of morality and it let us understand the famous few individuals are mortal and faults cannot be avoided.
What’s more, we should take it as our duty to prevent us from believing blindly in the reports about these scandals and should be careful to establish the facts relating to them before making any judgments. The world is complicated and the true is always concealed by certain disturbed complications. When a scandal comes into being, we should analyze it from all angles of views before accepting it. We master the option to trust it or not.
In sum, I agree that scandals –whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful for their calling our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could. Yet, we couldn’t accept the scandals without any deeply thinking. We should experience the course of analysis and then make our decision.
