The speaker asserts that compared with he anticipated problems of the future government should focus more on solving the immediate problems.
From my point of view, this absolute assertion violates the all-round principle which emphasizes one subject by demeaning some other critical factors, as discussed below.
To solve the immediate problems of today is the basic requirement of an efficient and qualified government. Imagine that if a government does poor performances on solving social problems such as starvation, domestic violence, compulsory education and so forth. Can you envision a bright future of no violence, no starvation, and no worry, guaranteed by such government? Furthermore, appropriately solving current social affairs contributes a lot to improve the credibility of the government which will be in turn beneficial in dealing with anticipated problems.
Focusing more on current problems doesn’t indicate ignoring anticipated problems, as far as I am concerned they are not two sides of a coin, but two aspects of one goal-to make our society more beautiful and harmony. It is well known that abuse of injectors in drug addicts plays an important role in spreading AIDS. Close scrutiny of our activities of fight against drug twenty years ago, the severe crackdown drug dealers greatly reduce the number of drug addicts which in turn limits the spread of AIDS. Moreover, nowadays most accepted method on controlling AIDS is to provide them with medicines for free, which will also prevents a vital epidemic some day later.
The reason of the priority of solving immediate problems lies another contention with the speaker, who logically presumes that the importance of current problems is surely overwhelming than anticipated ones. To the contrary, our common sense tells us that before we take something into action; we can never know the exact result---I mean some controversial social problems. One apt illustration of this point involves the so-called ‘appeasement policy’ at the beginning of the Second World War, championed by the Chamberlain administration, whose short-sighted compromise with Nazi leaded the whole world to a disaster.’ Appeasement policy’ of the consequences of appeasement has finally thrown himself head. Another example of this issue comes from North Korea. Driven by particular fantasy the whole nation are devoted to purchase the dream of owning nuclear weapons while ironically majority of his people’s daily food is mainly depending on international assistance. Of course their desire is reasonable and sounding, however they go to extremes to emphasis the significance of some anticipated technique while ignoring basic current needs
Since the government must focus on both current problems and anticipated ones in the fear of causing far-reaching influence on the society, we should be circumspect about some anticipated problems whose results are two vague and speculative. Take the ‘Star Wars’ defense initiative for example, the exorbitant amount of money was devoted to this ill-conceiving
project with the purpose of dominating the future war in space. However this amount of money could have gone a long way toward addressing pressing social problems as a better choice.
In sum, the speaker’s assertion that the only duty for government is focusing on immediate social problems is single-faceted and narrowly thinking, because without considering their inner link, the conclusion we get is isolated and unpersuasive .From the responsibility of the government I insist on the government should do their utmost to care about both current and anticipated problems—these problems should reach every aspect of social need form the poor to the elitists, from material to spirit, from current state to prosperous one. Nevertheless, consideration such limited public resources; the government should avoid devoting too much to controversial ones without clear aim and purpose. In the final analysis, we should strike a balance between current problems and future ones. |
