ARGUMENT231 - The following appeared in a letter to the editor of a local newspaper.

"The members of the town school board should not be reelected because they are not concerned about promoting high-quality education in the arts in our local schools. For example, student participation in the high school drama club has been declining steadily, and this year the school board refused to renew the contract of the drama director, even though he had received many awards for his original plays. Meanwhile, over $300,000 of the high school budget goes to athletic programs, and the head football coach is now the highest-paid member of the teaching staff."


The speaker suggests that members of the town school board should not be reelected since they do not have the will to improve the quality of education in the arts in local school. To convince the readers of the newspaper, he provide us several seeming convincing proofs, however, after close scrutiny of the whole letter, in find the suggestion render it flaws in several respects.

For the first place, the claim that student participation in the high school drama club has been declining steadily does not necessarily means that support to arts become less. Maybe the total number of students is decrease steadily these years and with a higher rate than those of participation in drama club or less students interest in drama or two much academic work make them have less time involve in club activities.

For the second place, the school board refused to renew the contract of the drama director does not equally mean that the school board reluctant to support arts because with excellent performance in writing play does not enable him a qualified leader. Furthermore, maybe they have found a more qualified director who won more awards than the formal one.

For the second place, over 300.000 dollars of the budget goes to athletic programs has little with the will of school board to support arts, because the speaker fail to provide evidence that budget for arts decreases and the amount decreases money of arts are given to athletic programs, or maybe budget for arts is far more 300.000 and faculties in arts have a higher salary than football coach.

Finally, even it is true that the members of the town school board reluctant to support arts in local school; it is unwarranted to conclude that they no longer suit to be members of the town school board. The speaker fails to provide evidence concerns with the decline of support to arts will impede further development of local school, without the evidence, it is possible that maybe the members of the town school board think that support to arts is too more in recent years and if some of them been used in other subject will promote the overall development of local school.
