TOPIC: ARGUMENT222 - The following article appeared in a recent issue of a college newspaper.

"Among all students who graduated from Hooper University over the past five years, more physical science majors than social science majors found permanent jobs within a year of graduation. In a survey of recent Hooper University graduates, most physical science majors said they believed that the prestige of Hooper University's physical science programs helped them significantly in finding a job. In contrast, social science majors who found permanent employment attributed their success to their own personal initiative. Therefore, to ensure that social science majors find permanent jobs, Hooper University should offer additional social science courses and hire several new faculty members who already have national reputations in the social sciences."

At first glance, the arguer's line of reasoning seems to be quite reasonable. According to his ot her conclusion, the Hooper University(HU) should offer additional social science courses and hire several new teachers who already have national reputation in the social sciences.But unfortunately, if we make a careful consideration of his or her conclusion, doubt will be cast on it.

To begin with, when we probe into the survey, we find lots of flaws in it. In order to establish the evidence to support this conclusion. The survey must be sufficient in sample(the size) and can be representative the whole HU's graduates. Without giving the evidence about this the arguer's conclusion is unwarranted.

Secondly, even if the result of the study is statistically representative, the arguer does not necessarily infer that the survey is useful. The arguer draws the results of the survey only on the basis of the expression of the students. Perhaps physical students are too shy to tell the truth. Or perhaps they have different levels to answer this question.

Thirdly, the evidence that more physical science majors than social science majors found permanent jobs within a year of graduation is unsustainable. the time of one year is too short to acctually get the conclusion. It is entirely possible that the social science graduates are wary of finding job. Even if jobs which salary and workplace are better than the phsical science students got, and that the social science students would be likely get the jobs after graduating two years.

Finally, even if the evidence is creditable the conclusion based on it is unreasonable. On the one hand, whether are(does )the social science lacking(lack) the courses that lead to the less job.? On the other hand, the problem of faculty might not the reason that the less job for the social science students.

After pointing out so many flaws in this argument, now we can say that the evidence to bolster the conclusion is unpersuasive.To strengthen it the arguer must shows that the physical science majors are indeed easy find the jobs than the social science, and that the results of the survey is statistically certifiable. And we should know more about the proposal.
