Issue147  "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."

Should we choose between tradition and modernization, as the speaker alleges? The speaker claim so, for the reason that he or she believe they are incompatible. In a sense, I tend to concede that sometimes Tradition and modernization are ambivalent. However, I do not completely side with this statement because the speaker claims the view by overlooking the crucial rule of another issue and unfairly give them a second priority. In my point of view, tradition and modernization are not incompatible and we can find the balance. An all-side consideration is needed when deciding the precedence.

First of all, the reason why I have such view is that tradition refers to believe, values, customs, ways of life, crafts, etc. , which are handed down from generation to generation in a society. To illustrate this point clearly, we can see that Gary Paulsen --the writer of Hatchet— tells us about a story that a young boy has stood up to the challenge of surviving alone in the woods. In his novel we can learn a number of survival techniques that are tradition. For example, how to make a fire with a small crabstick and to hunt and trap animals for your food when you have not any modern tools. So you know always the traditional way is useful, which are the same experience of many peoples. At the same time the modern technology is useless in this environment.

Nevertheless, the modern technology also develops a society. In the past, one of the biggest disadvantages of machines has been their inability to work on a micro scale. Let us see an example doctors did not have devices allowing them to go inside the human body to identify health problems or to perform delicate surgery. Repair crew did not have a way of identifying broken pipes located deep within a high-rise apartment building. However, that’s about to change. Advances in computers and biophysics have started a micro miniature revolution that’s allowing sciences to envision and in some cases actually build microscopic machines. These devices promise to radically change the way we live and work.

To balance Tradition and modernization is important for one’s life. The modern technology always based on the traditional way. Human being invent airplane because they want to fly as a bird. Due to the development of the aircraft we can go to anywhere even universe where on the past our ancestors image. Another example is that architects learn the configuration knowledge from the old building, and then they use this knowledge to protect these cultural relics.

To sum up, these is no fixed standard to judge the interest tradition and modernization of for us. Due to analysis and reasons mentioned with each other to generate an integrated whole and to become more persuasive than any signal one of them, and we may safely arrive at the conclusion that in present we need both tradition and modernization to develop our society.
