TOPIC: ISSUE147 - "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
WORDS: 609          TIME: 00:42:02          DATE: 2008-4-5 11:44:24

As rapid changes happen in modern society, more and more modern affairs come into people's lives, somthing even contradict with traditional customs, I concede these changes really puzzled human beings at frist. The speaker asserts that tradition and modernization are incompatible, one should choose between them. As far as I'm concerned, tradition and modernization are compatible though they sometimes are contradict to each other, one does not to choose between them, what one can do is to insist on his own principle between tradition and modernization.

First of all, tradition is playing an important role in the modernization of society. No matter how modern of the society, it cannot stand without tradition, tradition is the foundation of modernization. Take the folk songs for example, from even huandreds years BC, there are many folk songs which were popular in the town or suberb, some of them even came down to modern society. The Perking Opera is one of the most representive example. Now, it is regarded as the classic and traditional culture. Government and the public try their best to protect it from extinct. Perking Opera also influence the ways of popular songs as some poplular songs in China was a combination of opera and rock. Therefore, people can learn somthing from the old traditional culture which will benefit the growth of modern culture.

Secondly, even nowadys, society has developed to be a modern and fashional society, tradition still does not abandoned by society. As tradition is a signal of a sciety, tradition can influence the development of the society to some extent. I don't know whether I exgeerate the fact that tradition is the root of human culture and science. Human know the value of traditional culture and customs, traditional art tools and buildings and so forth. For example, tea culture in Japan is a traditional culture which existed more than 10 centuries ago and was intruded from China, even until today, they develop tea culture to be more populars, even other countries are influenced by tea, especially the western countries which does not know tea any before. In addition, the economic of Japan is developing so quickly and makes it to be a modern society, but the Japanese does not feel tea culture is incompatible with their modernization. So, traditins can be compatible with modernization.

However, I don't think that one should choose from tradition and modernization, one just need to insist on his own priciples between them. As discussed above, tradition not only bring us some new idea of modern culture but also it is compatible with modernization, so one should know when to advocate tradition, when to advocate modernization. On the on hand, to those traditional culture one should respect. If one does not interested them, one can only stand by side to view, but should not breake them. For instance, one should respect to those minorities and their special culture and custom. When people visit some famous traditional buildings such as the Great Wall, one must be impressed by the work of ancient Chinese. On the other hand, if one are interested in moderlizatin of society, one can accept them, but this does not confilct with the accetion of tradition in some circumstances. Thus, one don't need to choose from them, one just should understand them and keep in his mind to know when tradition is better and when moderlization is better.

In sum, the effect of tradition and moderlization are indispensible in modern society, they can benefit each other. Human should just call for a balance between them because they are not confilct each other, they can be compatible with each other in modern society.

So,traditins can be compatible with modernization. 这里举日本的茶例子不错,是原创的,但是你在将茶这个传统文化和日本现代化作比较的时候,应该具体点,譬如说与自动贩卖机的饮料(现代化的产物)作个比较,这样更具可比性(个人愚见) However, I don't think that one should choose fromtradition and modernization, one just need to insist on his ownpriciples between them. As discussed above, tradition not only bring ussome new idea of modern culture but also it is compatible withmodernization, so one should know when to advocate tradition, when toadvocate modernization(罗嗦了点).
