TOPIC: ARGUMENT8 - The following appeared in a memorandum issued by the strategic planning department at Omni Inc.
"Mesa Foods, a manufacturer of snack foods that currently markets its products within a relatively small region of the country, has strong growth potential. Mesa enjoyed a 20 percent increase in profits last year, and its best-selling product, Diabolique Salsa, has had increased sales over each of the past three years. Since Omni Inc. is interested in reaching 14-to-25 year olds, the age group that consumes the most snack food, we should buy Mesa Foods, and concentrate in particular on marketing Diabolique Salsa throughout the country."

The arguer suggests Omni Inc. purchase Mesa Foods, a food manufacturer and focus on the selling of Diabolique Salsa throughout the country. To support his suggestion, he presents Mesa Foods' business condition in the past few years and its market position as reasons. But through careful scrutiny, it is not difficult for us to pick out some fatal fallacies from the arguer's discussion.
Firstly, the arguer mentions that Mesa Food has concentrated its sellings only in a small region of the country, which can refute his conclusion itself. We can not find any reason to support that Mesa Foods, a company focus on a small region, will definitely gain more profits if it provides food in the whole nation. If the food provided by Mesa Foods is only popular in his small region, it is highly likely that it will fail to sell the food throughout the country. Here, the arguer refutes his conclusion by his own words.
Secondly, the data which are presented by the arguer to show that Mesa gained more profits last year can not support his conclusion either. A good selling condition of the last year can not determine the future. There is not any evidence which can prove that Mesa Foods will still gain more profits this year. Similarly, Diabolique Salsa's best selling over the past three years can not prove that it will be sold better this year. The arguer fails to convince that Mesa Foods has strong growth potential through these data.
Thirdly, even if Omni Inc. focus on the age group of 14-to-25 year old young persons which consumes the most snack food, we can not make the conclusion that purchasing Mesa Foods is a good decision. As has been discussed above, Mesa Foods is popular only in a small region of the nation. So if they can seize hearts of those young people throughout the country is not clear. And if its best selling food Diabolique Salsa can satisfy these people is also unclear. Thus, the recommendation that Omni Inc. should purchase Mesa Foods has not a convincing reason for us to affirm.
Given the discussion above, both the arguer's conclusion and suggestion are unresonable. More factors should be concerned and more survey should be done to support them or make him discard them.
