------题目------
A recent study suggests that people who are left-handed are more likely to succeed in business than are right-handed people. Researchers studied photographs of 1,000 prominent business executives and found that 21 percent of these executives wrote with their left hand. So the percentage of prominent business executives who are left-handed (21 percent) is almost twice the percentage of people in the general population who are left-handed (11 percent). Thus, people who are left-handed would be well advised to pursue a career in business, whereas people who are right-handed would be well advised to imitate the business practices exhibited by left-handers.
------正文------
Merely based on unfounded assumption and dubious evidence, the statement draw a conclusion that left-handed people would be well advise to pursue a career in business, whereas right-handed people would be well advised to imitate the business practices exhibited by left-handers. To substantiate the claim. the arguer cites the results of a recent study. In addition, he indicate taht there are more percentage of left-handed become prominent business executives. At first glance, the author's argument appears to be somewhat convincing, but further reflection reveals that it suffers from several logical flaws.
Firstly, the 1000 prominent business executives in the study are not necessarily representative of the whole population of executives. If the number of 1000 people is only a little percentage which would renders the result of the survey meaningless. Moreover, the study is only inspect through photographers instead of a long-term research, which cannot convince me that people wrote with their left-hand in the photo is a left-hander. it is very likely that they were do something else with the right hand. Or perhaps they can use both left-hand and right-hand. And, the photographs can be easily false or just a second rather than they are writing with the left-hand. Without ruling out all these possibilities, the arguer cannot make a solid conclusion that left-handers are more successful in business.
Secondly, even assuming that left-handers performance more well in business, the arguer oversimplifies the way people choose there career. The arguer ignores other aspects which should be concerned when anyone choose his or her career, such as interest, welfare and promising. Everyone has his own characters and can pursue his own dream rather than only regards whether it is most suitable. Thus, the arguer's easily claim that left-hander should pursue a career in business is unfounded at best.
What's more, the arguer fails to assume that right-hander should imitate the business practices exhibited by left-handed people, otherwise, right-handers would not success. There are thousands of approaches for right-handed people to success. Common sense and experience informs me that intuitions in business that left-handed people might be endowed cannot learned by simply imitating. Besides, right-handers are entirely possible having their own intuitions in other dimensions, and can achieve themselves through other ways. Without considering all these possibilities, the author's claim that right-handers should imitate left-handed people in business if they want to success is unwarranted.
To sum up, the conclusion lacks credibility because the evidence cited in the analysis does not lend strong support to what the arguer maintains. To make the argument more convincing arguer would have to provide more evidence concerning the samples' percentage of whole executives. In addition, if the author points out more exact reasons why left-handed people are so success in business, the argument will be more convincing. |
