题目:ISSUE131 - "The arts (painting, music, literature, etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society."

Sitting in a theater and seeing the opera, I was shocked and moved. Then a question comes to my mind: What are the arts stand for? Does it only a way for the painters or the composers to express their talent? No. Actually art is a way to express the real emotion or ideas of the authors. As the author’s ideas and feelings can always be influenced by the society, the art begin to be a way to reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of a society in a particular aspect.

Writers, who are always contrasted as the soldiers with only a pen, always put their ideas and emotions in their writings. As the famous Chinese writer Lu Xun, who was even nominated of the Nobel literature prize, had ever said (and I paraphrase it):"I need to arouse all the Chinese by my pen." He wrote a lot of novels in his entire life, which was forbidden to be published by the government. These writings try to persuade the Chinese to fight by their fists and to win in the war. They presented ideas of patriotic and to striving. However, these kinds of ideas cannot be expressed directly, for the government in that time was forced by the Japan. That is why Lu tries to arouse the people by using his pen. He expressed his ideas and the social impulses successfully, and the emotions and ideas of patriotic and striving were soon be accepted and developed by the Chinese. Finally, the people of China became braver and stronger, and they won in the World War II.

Another way of arts I want to mention is film. Some of us believe the film is a tool to excite people’s eyes and a show of the beautiful pictures. But I do not think so. I believe all the directors infuse their own ideas and emotions to the film. We can always find the hidden ideas and impulses of a society in the film. Taking the Chinese Movie ”Bicycle to the moon” for example, this film was directed in the time of culture revolution which is chaos and becomes the very pain memory to most of the old man. And the movie is about a man who decided to create a bicycle which can help him to arrive at the moon. Obviously it was ridiculous, and we all believe it was a comedy. However, the director says several years later that the film is something can reveal the way people thinking: the Chinese people believe they will be the strongest in the world in tens of years, and Chairman Mao believed it too, although the China becomes a very weak country after world war II. So the director tried to excite the public and tell them do not be the guy in the film and people need to reconsider about themselves because they were still in an under developed country. But he failed. However, several years later people still can find the hidden ideas and impulses of that society through the film.

However, we should not expect that every arts works can reveal these or those hidden ideas of a society. The paintings and the sculptures always reveal the ideas and impulses of the author. And those artists always live in a world of themselves. That is to say, the works can only reflect the authors’ mental world, but do nothing about the real society. Mona Lisa is the most famous painting in the world and people concedes it as the best works of Vinci, but no one says he/she can find something like hidden ideas in the painting. Vinci put all his emotions and love into the painting, and whenever he raised his pencil, he forgot any ideas. The painting is everything. So no one can find such hidden ideas in the painting because it has no ideas.

In sum, I can agree with the author insofar as some arts works can really reflect the hidden ideas and impulses of a society. However, we need to concede that some arts works can only reveal the authors’ emotions and affections. They are pure and clean.
