Do you agree or not that the extended family (grandparents, cousins, uncles and antes) becomes less important nowadays than it was in the past?

In my mind, I strongly agree with the argument that the importance of the extended family nowadays becomes inferior compared with the past. There are a couple of reasons.

First of all, the most important factor accounting for the statement is that individuals become more independent than the past. Due to the fast development of society, individuals enjoy living more independent than ever before. With the high income, it is easy for them to live along instead of living with other family members including their grandparents, uncles, antes and so like. As a result, the importance of the former big family decreases. Modern adults are typical examples. As we all know, nowadays, in order to enjoy personal space, young couples are more likely to live along instead of living with their parents, let along their grandparents. Thus they could make their own decisions. Consequently, the original extended family in the past becomes less important now.

Furthermore, far distance among family members is responsible for decreasing the importance of the former extended family. In order to meet the needs of jobs, family members have to live far with each other than the past, which causing the decrease in connecting. Accordingly, less communication would weaken the importance of origin big family. My home is just an example. When I was young, I lived with my parents and grandparents. After I graduated from school, I began to work in another city which was far away to my home. So hardly can I go home except the national holiday. I could truly feel that the origin importance of my family becomes weak than before. Therefore, far distance among family members is another factor weakening the extended family.

In sum, with the far distance among family members and high independence of individuals, the importance of extended family truly weakens nowadays.
