Some people think that governments should spend as much money as possible on developing or buying computer technology, while others hold the idea that basic human needs such as food, accommodation, health, should be granted with utmost concern. As far as I concerned, both views are too extreme. Only a balance between technology progress and basic needs can establish a sustaining and buoyant civilization.
Above all, food, shelter, and a healthy body are every mortal’s first concern, because no one can survive without them. Without surviving, progress is nothing but nonsense. In a social level, history tells incompetent rulers are always overthrown by famished pariah. Therefore, it is wholly logical to endow great concern and resources to focus on people’s fundamental satisfactions.
However, one thing distinguishes human beings from other inferior mindless animals is human have mental needs. That is to say, we are not live to live but live to thrive. Look back to latest 100 years, we’ll be amazed how many boons computer technology had brought us. Thanks to internet, now people live in every corner of the world can contact with their friends and families instantaneously. Computer advancement also realizes outer space exploration, which is unimaginable to our ancestors.
Furthermore, to some degree, computer advancement does in turn help improve and facilitate human basic needs. For instance, computerized machines make farming more scientific and effective, which generate more productive outcome. With more available food, there will be less people die of hunger. Another significant progress computer technology contribute to human beings is genetic project. Powerful computer and delicate electric microscope help scientists to analyze the origin of animation. If this project succeed, one day in the near future, people will no longer being tortured by agonizing diseases and human life-span will be prolonged which allows one to do more meaningful things and make more revolutionary contributions in his or her longer lifetime.
Judging from these apparent benefactions we now enjoy due to computer technology advancements, as long as a government focus on development, it is impossible to not lay great emphasis on it. On the other hand, however advanced human beings are, we are still animals with basic physical needs. Therefore, government should strike a balance between technology progress and living needs. |
