I agree with part of the author's assertion that breaking down the illusion that people in one period of time are significantly different from people of any other time in history is the chief benefit of the study of history. However, the author asserts a little extremely to some extent. I take exceptions with this assertion when it comes to the following two aspects: people of different times are significantly the same; breaking down that illusion is the chief benefit of study in history.
To begin with, it is true that people, from different period of time, actually are the same with each other. According to the theory of 6-level hierarchy motives, by American Psychologist, Abraham Maslow, all the human behaviors are impelled from 6 levels that ranges from low to high: Physiological, security, love, esteem, full-filment and curiosity. It is obvious that people of either ancient times or modern times have the habit to work hard in order to feed themselves. Besides, every period of time, there are always quantities of people having strong curiosity to discover the world without whose efforts our society couldn’t have experienced so many big progresses since ancient times. The unconsciousness motives those behaviors, both the lower and the higher. Here is a small example to better illustrate this conclusion. In medieval, there was a kind of good moral called chivalry which is the same with the modern moral: heroism. The only difference is the way we call them. Therefore, the human nature hardly changes during this long period of time.
However, people of different times form their own characteristic. With the rigid development of society and technology, especially the trends of globalization, the characteristic of people in different countries have been influenced more or less by the out-coming culture. After that---sometimes we call it "culture invasion"--- the new characteristic differentiate from before. Even if the people is not involved into the globalization, they are also heavily affected by their developing technology which will change not only the way of life but also their moods, value, culture. For example, the high-intensified pace of life has made every person more vulnerable, less contact with their neighbor, resulting in a cold relationship from each other. All these will be unimaginable in ancient times. Thus, people have really confronted a lot of changes from this point of view.
Further, there are other functions in the study of history. As we all know, the major effects of learning history is to remember the experiences of before, especially the faults our procedure had made, in order to serve for the future, sometimes even predict the future. Moreover, study of history can teach us to tell between good and wrong, establishing a set of system of morality. As the saying goes, history is like a mirror. Hence, the study of history can teach us a lot rather than just telling us whether people of different times are the same.
In sum, we have to look on the question that if people in one period of time are significantly different from people who lived at any other time in history, from two points of view as mentioned above. Meanwhile, many other important benefits should not be ignored except breaking down that illusion from study of history.
