TOPIC: ISSUE40 - "Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."
WORDS: 532 TIME: 0:45:00 DATE: 2006-9-4
In this era of information and knowledge increasing fast, science and technology has been paid more and more attention by people. When the arguer asserts that scholars and researchers should consider whether their work match their individual interests, fundamentally I agree with this point. However, interest is not the only motivity for scholars and researchers to work hard in their different academic fields.
Nobody would predicate what kind of research is useful or not in the future. Many significant achievements in scientific and art fields are recognized after they created several years ago. Because new inventions and new concepts were always too distinctive from the concepts at that time to be understood by most people. For instance, when the scientist Wigner created the continental drift theory, the whole world was laughing at him, and people all thought that this theory is ridiculous. Everyone wants to assail him how can continents move as a boat. Wigner did not disappoint and insist on his research. Finally, several years ago, more evidences were found and many other scientists began to identify with him. People accepted the continental drift theory and the effort of Wigner. Hence, scholars and researcher should persist their research even if their research is not understood and accepted by the larger society.
Although many researches can not make a contribution to the larger society, scholars and researchers have the responsibility to keep studying these projects. Because, many projects seem have little relations with most people, but the significance to the whole human is important. The Apollo (moon landing) Project is the best example. Numerous scholars and researchers worked for this great project day and night. Indeed, the success of landing the moon can not change a usual person's living condition, but as the astronaut Armstrong said:" That is one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." Successfully actualizing this project improved the technology evidently, and it indicated that human start to explore out space. Therefore, no matter how unusual and difficult those projects seems, achieving it maybe has much benefit to the human, even if it is not concerned with the large society.
When discussing whether scholars and researchers should purse their individual interests, In my view, it is a proper suggestion. The famous modern scientist Albert Einstein once said:" Interest is the best teacher." Scholars and researchers study with what they are interested in would be more efficient. For example, Marie Curie worked four years in the laboratory and discovered the radioactive element Ra. It is interest to support her stay in the laboratory for experiment. If she do not like study in this scientific field, it is impossible for her to do experiment for four years. Hence, pursing interests has advantages for scholars and researchers gaining great success.
In conclusion, it is uncertain about whether what the scholars and researchers study now is useful to the large society. To study knowledge and science which scholars and researchers are interested in is a good and efficient way to get success. Although pursing interests is important, scholars and researchers would take account of the benefit of the most society. After all, it is one responsibility of scholars and researchers. |
