TOPIC: ARGUMENT147 - The following appeared in an editorial in a business magazine.
"Although the sales of Whirlwind video games have declined over the past two years, a recent survey of video-game players suggests that this sales trend is about to be reversed. The survey asked video-game players what features they thought were most important in a video game. According to the survey, players prefer games that provide lifelike graphics, which require the most up-to-date computers. Whirlwind has just introduced several such games with an extensive advertising campaign directed at people 10 to 25 years old, the age-group most likely to play video games. It follows, then, that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically in the next few months."

Before the conclustion that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically in the next few months could be made,we needs to examine the cited evidence from several angles.
In the first place, the author fails to provide necessary information about the survey,such as the way it is conducted and its respondents.It is at least likely that the researchers who carried out the survey were not well-trained or not experineced that they mistakenly ignore some of the other important provisions and considerations ,for example,they might neglect to provide some more avaialbe considerations ,such as the accompanying music of the game,for respondents to make a more reliable choice.Therefore, people who would have selected the accompanying music as the most important feature may eventually chose lifelike graphics for lacking in choices.Futher, we also want to know the representativeness of the respondents who took part in the survy. At least, the author should inform us about the age group , the occupation and the sex of the respondents.Perhaps, those who consider life graphics to be the most important feature are mostly male adulescents, whereas other female game players or adolescents would consider the accompanying music or the price to be the most important feature of the game.Thus, based on a false and incomplete result of the survey, the conclusion may mislead the Whirlwind video games toward a wrongheaded decision.
Even if we accept the result of the survey, yet, there is no guarantee that the sales of Whilrlwind video games would be likely to increase in the future. Firstly, as soon as the result of the survey is published, there would be numbers of companies which produce similar games to compete with each other for the share of the thriving market.Therefore, other than the Whirlwind video games,there would be a great number of video games available for consumers to make a choice.Thus, without any guanrantee that all the consumers would choose the Whirlwind video game,the conclusion that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically in the next few months is too hasty to make.
Further more, for the sales of a product to increase dramatically, there are far more things to take into account than its popularity,such as the quality of the product.If people bought the and found it to be of bad quality,which may be can only played for once, then the reputation of the product would get ruined and people would refuse to purchase any productsof the Whirlwind video games,thereby the whole sales would stop increasing anymore.
The argument lack credibility in that the author fails to provide the necessary infomation about the survey,for the result of the survey to be convincing, the author needs to inform us the sampling of the survey .To steadly increase the sales of the games , the Whirlwind video games should put more things into consideration and a close study of the market should be conducted , far more than the mere consideration of the popularity of its product . |
