TOPIC: ARGUMENT174 - The following recommendation was made by the president and administrative staff of Grove College, a private institution, to the college's governing committee.

"We recommend that Grove College preserve its century-old tradition of all-female education rather than admit men into its programs. It is true that a majority of faculty members voted in favor of coeducation, arguing that it would encourage more students to apply to Grove. But eighty percent of the students responding to a survey conducted by the student government wanted the school to remain all female, and over half of the alumni who answered a separate survey also opposed coeducation. Keeping the college all-female, therefore, will improve morale among students and convince alumni to keep supporting the college financially."

In this recommendation the president and the staff recommend that Grove College (GC) preserve its century-old tradition of all-female education rather than admit men into its programs. To support his standpoint, they cite a survey which shows that eighty percent of the respondents want the school to remain all female. Furthermore, they cite another survey to show half of the alumni also opposed coeducation. Finally, they assert the preservation of the tradition will improve morale among students and convince alumni to keep supporting the college financially. They commit some fallacies to support their recommendation.

Firstly, they fail to provide enough information of the survey to convince us of the opposition of the students.  They should indicate the exact number of students who take part in the survey and the proportion of the respondents in GC. If there are only 10 students taking the survey by the student government, even all of them oppose coeducation will infer no actual value for the conclusion. The same fallacy is in the survey for the alumni.

Secondly, assuming the survey given is convincible, whether keeping the college all-female will improve morale among students and convince alumni to keep supporting the college financially is still open to doubt. They fail to assume such situation: most of the alumni donate only a handful proportion of the money, while few alumni, who donate the most proportion, is in favor of coeducation. As a result, the coeducation will certainly bring GC more financial support.

In conclusion, the presidents and the administrative fail to support the recommendation on the preservation of the tradition, all-female. In order to provide enough evidence, they should give enough details of the survey and eliminate the possibility that richest alumni will certainly support the co-education.

If there are only 10 students taking the survey by the student government, even all of them oppose coeducation will infer no actual value for the conclusion[这个句子的主语不明确]. The same fallacy is in the survey for the alumni.

Secondly, assuming the survey given is convincible, whether keeping the college all-female will improve morale among students and convince alumni to keep supporting the college financially is still open to doubt. They fail to assume such situation: most of the alumni donate only a handful proportion of the money, while few alumni, who donate the most proportion, is [are] in favor of coeducation. As a result[If this is the case], the coeducation will certainly bring GC more financial support.

In conclusion, the presidents and the administrative fail to support the recommendation on the preservation of the tradition, all-female. In order to provide enough evidence [我觉得应该是为了支持结论,不是为了提供论据], they should give enough details of the survey and eliminate the possibility that richest alumni will certainly support the co-education.

我要是限时,估计也只能想到这两个~ 呵呵
