TOPIC: ISSUE147 - "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
WORDS: 488          TIME: 1:08:11          DATE: 2007-1-25

Tradition and modernization, whereas dramatically contrast as it seems literally, are not mutually exclusive to each other. Either treating tradition versus modernization as a zero-sum game or identifying them as two absolute options is obviously overridden by rigid understanding of these two terms. Thus, I believe that tradition and modernization are not incompatible in a broader sense.

Admittedly, individual life in detail aspects can be classified as traditional or modern without much difficulty. In an oriental community, whether to have a wedding following a traditional style or to plan a western and modern wedding may be encountered by many upcoming couples. Or a teacher may deal with his/her students as friends by fostering an equable and interactive communicative environment, as well as maintain the traditional authority as supervisor by creating a gap of different status. Nevertheless, does above sufficiently substantiate that tradition and modernization are mutually exclusive choices?

No, tradition and modernization are not hence incompatible according to the discrete circumstances. An orient couple can choose to perform both traditional rites and to wear fashionable wedding dresses in the dinner, if permitted economically. Or they may take a wedding in a rational form and live with their parents, rather than living by their own in the prevailing mode. Most people have a life that the innumerable events, aspects and matters that incorporate both traditional and modern elements, so that the profile is not impossible to tell between tradition and modernization.

In the macro analysis, claiming tradition and modernization to be incompatible is likely built upon the inelastic view of tradition and a hostility aptitude against modernization. Recently there are a great number of criticisms on the Chinese internet community about Starbucks, a coffee shop in the multinational merchant chain, that its operation in the Forbidden City, former palace of Qing dynasty, undermines Chinese tradition. However, with a close scrutiny, this issue is exaggerated. By recognizing or acknowledging that camera films and Coca-Cola have been sold there for a considerable period, which are by no less sense non-traditional as Starbucks, the operation of Starbucks are no longer striking in the Forbidden City.

More than likely, it is because by denying the compatibility of tradition and modernization, people are not able to reconcile the so-call tradition and modernization trade-off and hence conclude them to the opposite position. As well-known that Olympics originates from the ancient Olympic game, did people have even consider the trade-off between a traditional Olympics by allowing "free men" only and a modern Olympic participated with both male and female athletes? In contrast, the Greek use an olive brand as in the logo to remind people their relevance with the ancient Olympics in the modern 2004 Olympic Game in Athens.

In sum, tradition and modernization are artificially misdirected to be incompatible. A more flexible and widened concept about the critical relation between tradition and modernization should be promoted that a well preserved tradition are maintained and perceived in our modernized daily life.

An orient couple can choose to perform both traditional rites and to wear fashionable wedding dresses in the dinner, if permitted economically. (例子的上下呼应,很好;如果加上传统和现代在教育上的结合就更好了) Or they may take a wedding in a rational form and live with their parents, rather than living by their own in the prevailing mode. 感觉上面两段都是先提出一个主题句,然后就开始写例子(咖啡与紫禁城、奥运会),感觉可以在例子之前有一点理论说明,既可以更好的引出例子,又可以增加字数
