题目:ARGUMENT147 - The following appeared in an editorial in a business magazine.
"Although the sales of Whirlwind video games have declined over the past two years, a recent survey of video-game players suggests that this sales trend is about to be reversed. The survey asked video-game players what features they thought were most important in a video game. According to the survey, players prefer games that provide lifelike graphics, which require the most up-to-date computers. Whirlwind has just introduced several such games with an extensive advertising campaign directed at people 10 to 25 years old, the age-group most likely to play video games. It follows, then, that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically in the next few months."

In this argument, the arguer concludes that the declining sales trend of video game will reverse soon. To justify this assumption the arguer shows a result of a survey that video-game players prefer games that provide lifelike graphics, which requires the most modern computers. In addition the arguer also points out that Whirlwind has just introduced several such games to people aged 10 to 25.Moreover the arguer assumes that the age-group most likely to play video games. But argument is convincing for several critical flaws.
In first place, the arguer fails to convince us that all video-game players prefer the lifelike graphics.Firstly,is the sample size large enough?Secondly,is the sample resentative? No evidence was mentioned in this argument .Thus the assumption that all video-game players will like the lifelike graphics is dubious .
In the second place, even if all video-players will prefer the game with lifelike graphics,we can not ensure that they will choose to play it .As mentioned in the argument, such video-games require the most up-to-date computers. It is possible that some of them can not accord so high price ,or that ,even though they have enough money to change the computer,it is unnecessary for them to do so.What is more ,the arguer just place attention directly to people 10 to 25 years old, which says little to demonstrate that all the video-game players will be likely to play such games.(这里想加些反驳的论据,但不知道怎么写啊)
Finally, the arguer fails to take into accout other relevant factors which will cause the decline of the sales in video games is it because the limited demand of the market ,or because the design of features in the video game can not meet the players's requires,or because the peace of life is too fast to have time playing the game?Under these circumstances, the assumption that the sales of video games will increase dramatically is not convincing.
To sum up ,the conclusion lacks credibibilty because the evidence cited in the analysis does not lend strong support to what the arguer maitains. To strengthen the argument ,the arguer would have to provid more evidences concerning the actual factors that are relevant to the decline of sales in video-games.To better evaluate the argument,we would need more information regarding the representaty of the sample in the survey. |
