Topic138. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? It is better to be a member of a group than to be the leader of a group. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

The concept “group” embodies socialization, one of the dominant social cultures that are currently taking our world, and it is through group that one identifies himself as a leader or a member. Claiming that being a member of a group is superior to the leader as the speaker does, though is not without merit, it is not availing in the long run, especially in this highly competitive world.

Indubitably, leader, as its literal meaning, conveys the connotation of power. A leader has the voice in his group and could make decisions of comprehensive affairs. Being a leader means one has to address the quotidian issues and sometimes haphazard ones occurring in that group. The ability of this kind is not inborn, so one has to acquire it through continuous practice and the process itself will inevitably enhance the faculty of the leader. For example, how to set the goals, in what methods could make the leader’s voice heard, and the realization of burdensome responsibility all are not easy-taken things which a member might not encounter, and thus he will not have the opportunity to improve his capacity.

Furthermore, the competitive world sometimes drives one to be a leader and the essence of competition determines that a leader outweighs a member. Employees, in order not to be fired, endeavor to achieve a higher level of position, as only being a common member could not guarantee his current job. This also applies to the sphere of politics. Elite politicians strive for the success of election for the purpose of their steady standing in the political areas, consequently, they get a say and propel the nation in the direction of their plans. For the means of survival, people should put their enthusiasm of pursuit the leader. Maintaining the position of a member in the group amounts to being always subordinate to others and of course is not proper in this world advocating competition.

However, the will of becoming a leader should not render the member of no importance. For instance, in a certain field it is critical for a newcomer to be a member for some time. He should observe the behavior of others and through initial simple practice accumulate the experience. If at first he encounters intricate things that conspicuously out of his own control, it cannot facilitate him to build up confidence in the new field. Too much pressure is more detrimental than beneficial for a novice. So from this perspective, a member is better than the leader.

In sum, I generally hold an opposite view to the speaker. Without some exceptional cases, it is better to be a leader than to be a member. At least in the process of pursuing for the position of a leader, we will find ourselves broadening the ken and advancing the ability.
