As the age of television coming, the contents of televison program have became wider and richer, thus watching televishon is no longer for merely entertainment, but provides an significant and effective way of study. Thereby, the speaker claim that because of more knowledeges could be learned on television, traditional reading is substituted. Whereas, in my view, watching television is differ from reading books in many respects hense both being important.

To any degree we measure the contribution of television is not outranged. Broadcasting combined vidios and audios, the television enable knowledge to be transmited vividly and acceptablely. It is easier and more impressive to acquire information directly by sitting in front of screen than trasforming that in one's mind from the stady words and pictures in books. When studying history, a clip of video about world war two would take us back to those period contenged with gun fires and sorrows, and in the same way, Discovery Channel would enable us to enter the ants' nest to observe the lives in darkness, which help us better understand what we learned in biology class. The television make it possible for us to visit any where in the world, from the deep sea where strange fishes illuminate by themselves, to the outer space with numerous beautiful stars more than meets the eye. So, the phenomenon is commen in modern society that people would spend more time on television rather than on the books considered to be relatively pale and dull.

However, it is the form of watching television itself determind that we are receiving information passivly while reading book is a process of seeking knowledge volantarily. No matter how interesting and how knowledgable the television programs are on show, in some sense, we can just accept what is made into a program which is a small amount comparing to the whole thesaurus. Unlike finding books in a library to learn whatever knowledge we want to learn, the only content we could touch is limited in the list of television programs besides lots of advertisments and entertainment shows that take a large part of time. In addition, psychological research asserts that human's brain is in low activity and thoughtfulness during watching television when both eyes and ears are under strongly stimulation, and that for a long time would decline one's IQ. 'Coach potato' is used to call those long time television audience, vividly describing the harmfulness to them.   

Besides the passiveness and limitation of watching television, there are scores of advantages of reading books that television could not offer. Carring a book is convenient. You can read on bed, in journey, in park or, as many people's habits, in bathroom. More than conveniece, reading is aesthetic sometimes. Nothing can compare, sitting on the grass field, in the warm shining of the early May, one can spent the whole afternoon with a great book, losting oneself in a wonder land. No wonder why many great figures in the history love reading books that not only plays an insubstituted role in their growth, but become their hobbies too.        

In sum, although television enlarge our horizon and made knowledge more acceptable, its importance as a tool of learning are limited by the passively receiveing way and fixed contents, While reading books provide unbounded knowledge range, convenience and asthetic sensibility. Accrodingly, the television could not take place of reading books, thus both are important channels of learning.
