蓝色的是我易错的字,从word中拷过来就这样了。。。
题目:ARGUMENT83 - The following appeared in a memo from the business manager of Medicine, Inc., a local drugstore.
"Most business analysts for the drugstore industry have stated that even when a nation's economy is weak, drugstores' profits are unlikely to decline appreciably. While consumers might put off some kinds of purchases when the economy is slow, prescription and over-the-counter drug purchases are dictated by consumers' health needs, which are independent of the economy. Therefore, Medicine Inc. is likely to continue to have increasing profits and should plan to open an additional drugstore next year."

In this argument, the manager of Medicine, Inc. advocates that their profits of drugstores will not decline, and they should open a new drugstore next year, even if national economy is weak. However, close scrutiny reveals that the author has made a hasty generation, based on a series of dubious assumptions.
First, the arguer fails to prove that the profits will not decline when economics is weak. When the economy is weak, people will consider more about their work life, but not their physical fitness. They might like to pay money on hunting jobs, and try to reduce the expenditure on daily life. Moreover, although it might be true that prescription and over-the-counter drug are related to people's health need, they are not irreplaceable. People can easily find other substantial other than drugs to improve their health. For example, they can take more food with high protein to improve the resistibility of their bodies. Or they can drink more water and sleep more to gain a better health.
Second, the unfair conclusion that the profits will increase is open to doubt. Since we do not know the condition of economy now and the future, whether the sale profits will increase or decline is suspect. Even if drug purchases are independent of the economy, there are many other factors may influence the sale of drugs. Perhaps people are now encouraged to have healthy lifestyle, rendering a high level of health in the majority. Even if the purchases of drugs are in a great amount, profits are influenced by many other factors, such as revenue, taxes, costs and the like. It is entirely possible that some nurture sale in the drugstores does not sell well, so that influences the profits.
Third, whether an additional drugstore needs to built requires further discussion. Is there more demand than supply in the present drugstores? Will the sales continued to increase to the next year? The arguer has to provide more information to answer these questions. Also, the author should consider other problems of opening a new store, such as the costs and location. If the costs are far more than the increasing sale profits, it would not be wise to open such a new drugstore.
To sum up, the arguer unfairly concluded that the profits of the local drugstore will increase in the next year and an additional store is needed. Without further information to prove that the sales will continue to increase and an additional store is necessary, the manager’s conclusion is dubious. To better the recommendation, the manager should consider all the factors that would influence the sales profits, and do a detailed survey to prove that a new store is in need. |
